I have been looking for a paint color for my roadster. i want a black color that has a hint of blue or purple to it. i want to use single stage, no metallic or pearl or kandy. i have a feeling im going to have to take a formula and have the paint store modify it, but i thought some one out there may be able to steer me in a close direction with out spending the next 4 saturdays at the paint store custom mixing by the pint until i find the right mix. any help would be appreciated. i have both ppg & dupont dealers in the area.
Some paint companies have colors in a book in order of shade (color map). Sikkens (akso nobel) does and I think some others do also. Let your fingers do the walking, then go look at the book. Buy a small amount for a test panel and ask what car make the chip is for. Then, when you have a make and year you can use that info to buy your color at any paint store by asking for a dark blue for a 1966 Henway or whatever. overspray
We used to use a color called midnight blue, it was the worlds darkest blue and looked black until the light hit it. I know you can blow some pearl over black and pearl comes in colors or tints. perhaps you can mix some blue pearl in your black.
35, I have a Dodge Brothers I painted a few years ago. It is dark blue with black fenders. We found a 70's or 80's Chevy truck color and added a little black to it, it's not metallic. In certain light it looks black.
In the late 90's there is a GM color called black sapphire. I think that is what you want. You'll have to shoot it in base coat/clear coat, though, those kinds of paint don't come out well in single stage.
Go to any auto body shop and talk to someone about what you're looking for. I'd Start off with a blue and add more black untill you get the shade you're looking for. Even add a little purple to add more richness to the color. I'm about to do a similar shade on GM cruiser. That technique works for me when i'm wanting to make a custom color.
The Black on Hondas for the past few years has had a blue pearl dusted in it. Our '06 Civic is a gunmetal Gray with a Green and a hint of Red mica pearl dusted on it that makes it irridescent like the trench coats we usta wear in the '60s The Midnight Blue metallic is current on a lot of cars. I just saw it on a Camry and Honda has a darker version and Ford a little lighter. I know you want a hint of Blue in Black but mixing it up you should go with a hint of black in a blue, and/or red in blue. Guys usta paint cars "Burple" which was purple with a little, or a lot of black added.
I saw a late-model Porsche the other day that I thought was black, until I pulled alongside and saw the sun highlight on it -- it was actually a super dark g**** purple. It may have been metallic, it may have been two stage, but you could start by looking in a paint store's color books for late Porsche colors and might find a recipe that's close to what you want.
Hey sounds great! I knew i would get some help from you guys. i appreciate all the help. i atleast have a few cars and years to come up with something. I took an old Fram canister filter and had the paint matched and painted the rims. i think the blue/ black would go good with them. thanks again!!
There was a GM color called black-cherry. Real sweet, just what you're describing, my buddy painted his '64 Chevy pickup in that, it looked real good. Make sure the color has pearl in it, so it 'flips' in the sunlight, you'll like it....
