Now that I have both brake lights working I'd like to convert the backup lights to tail lights/brake lights/turn signals just like the outside one. (A guy in Florida had some red lenses made so finding a couple won't be a problem.) I bought a couple of 2 filament sockets at Advance this morning which are 3/4" and called "universal" but they're smaller than the sockets that are in there now and are too small for the hole. So my questions are where can I get a couple that are the correct size or does anyone have a couple of used ones that they may want to sell? Thanks....

Since most of us don't have a 60 Edsel to look at, maybe you could measure the diameter of the hole....????

  3. If it were me, I'd just convert the back-ups to taillights and let it go at that. Adding the 'extra' brake/turn lamps will double the load on the brake light switch, and add 50% more load on the turn switch...

It looks like it's an inch in diameter. Do you know who sells them? Anyone have any used ones?

I'm sure that is a standard Ford part. Try a 1960s Ford socket . Pick your model.!!

Are those the ones with the 2 phenolic discs with the spring between them? NAPA can match them up, but may not have them in stock. Any of the usual Ford parts suppliers should have them. I used a GM metal shell socket on my Ford, which required a 1.125" hole in the light bucket. Post some pix of your old socket.

NAPA has one that's 1 1/8" in diameter which I think will work for $4.95 each. He said they would be there tomorrow morning. Do you guys think this one will work?

It's worth a try. you can also bend the tangs a little to adjust the size, within reason. But if the hole is really 1" and the socket is for 1-1/8" hole, then you might need to either get the one I showed, or start hacking away at the housing, to make the hole larger.

I measured it again and it may be 1 1/8" after all. If they won't fit I'm not going to enlarge the hole because the manager at NAPA will probably let me return them. He's a cool guy who always gives me a 10% "Edsel discount" on everything I buy there....

Any wiring experts out there? The sockets I'm getting tomorrow each have 2 wires coming from them so if I want the (original) backup lights to do the exact same thing as the brake/tail lights and turn signals next to them should I just splice one wire into the tail light wire and the other one into the brake light wire on each side of the car? Will that make the turn signals work too or was I supposed to get sockets with 3 wires coming from them? Could I still use these 2 wire ones and have 4 tail lights and 4 brake lights and only one turn signal on each side? I'm trying to figure out in my head now how I want to wire them tomorrow morning. Do they need to be grounded or will they be grounded when I clip the sockets into the enclosure? Thanks....

The 2 wire sockets that you ordered will work if spliced into the tail light on the same side.

If you decide to just go with the single lamp, the back up light wattage is greater than the low wattage of the stock tail/brake light and will look wield. In the 60's we did it to a 62 Chev Impala, tapped into the tail light wiring and changed the lense. Always looked stupid with one light brighter on each side. Go the dual way if you can....

  18. The outer rim with the clips is what acts as your ground connection, that is if your housing is metal and grounded of course.

If I have an 1157 bulb in all 4 sockets I don't see how that could happen. I'll mess around with it this morning and see what happens....

The tail bulbs you use with two wire lights (brake/turn and tail in one bulb) have two filaments, but they are different, one is bright, one is dim. Make sure you wire the bright and dim to the correct place. Might need to do it over (switch wires), if you get it wrong the first try. Notice that the bulbs have the little locating pins at different heights, so you can't easily put them in "backwards".

Yes, you just splice the wires to the wires that are there for the existing light.

The answer to your question about the turn signals is. Brake light and turn signals use the same wire and bulb filament, that's why only two wire on the socket

On the Advance Auto Parts website they have a socket with 3 wires which is why I asked if I could use the one with two. I got them wired up correctly in less than an hour this morning so I'm pretty happy about that. Thanks to all for the help....
