Technical Driving your hot rod at night.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Apr 9, 2017.

  1. I have a problem that I'm sure a lot of your have experienced, the guy in the car behing you is in a jacked up truck or has those laser beam head light that blinds you when reflecting off your interior rear vies mirror.

My Deuce has the original mirror so there is no provision for shading the glare,my normal answer is to remove my cap and hang it on the mirror.

Have any of you guys found a small mirror that works like a late model or a aftermarket piece that clips on like the clip on sunglasses? HRP

Day/Night mirrors have been around a long time, if that's what you're looking for.

The cap trick sounds like the right solution, though.

Had one of those blinding trucks behind me last night on my way home through Tucson. Like spotlights.

GM ---1948 and a slightly larger version for 49-54 cars. Polished SS back with a ribbed design.

Available as repros that need a slight adjustment as they have too much travel on the bottom edge of the glass. A narrow band of steel slipped inside the frame at the bottom where the lever is cures that.

Originals are probably better, but I got tired looking for a decent one. Can always change it out later.

Sorry don't have a pic, but check someone like Chevy's of the 40s.

  9. Danny , I am lucky all my old cars have day time, night time mirrors. Now about those ass hole who get right on your tail to see what kind of car your driving .I have been there. They had the now calling it the Spring Rod Run was this week end. I couldn't make it due to waiting for my carb and getting the 56 Chrysler ready for paint.Bruce.

get some 60% window tint and put on the mirror. you can see through it in the daytime and it will dull the light reflection at night

I'm not a big fan of driving my 32 at night. I have the same stock mirror and I get all sorts of weird reflections off the mirror and the flat glass.

I try to avoid it, but I always get caught after dark when we have to get home from a late event. Just like avoiding the rain....sometimes you fail big time.

  16. Not that I would ever encourage anyone to do anything outside the law......
but one of those fittings in the tailpipe to inject some of your used crankcase oil usually gets 'em to back way off.

  17. Here's how you handle that situation....

That is why the old ford coupes had a rear blind.

Airplane landing lights below the rear bumper should convey your message.

    Danny,
Sorry, but I was having a good time bustin' on you and forgot that my '37 Chevy coupe, which is still in Winter storage, has an aftermarket piece of colored plexiglass that mounts on the stock rear view mirror and can be flipped down for night driving. It really works well and, since it was from the 40's - early-50's, looks right at home in the car.
Below is a picture of it, but I don't have a pic of it installed. The plexiglass is the exact same size as the stock mirror and swings down into place easily, when needed. I'm sure you could fab something like it pretty easily to serve your needs.

Tag Man, I like that idea, but what do you do about the side mirrors? I have them on my roadster and on my '40. The one's on the '40 are the "swan neck" type the roadster's are just small round mirrors. Need them for traffic when you're old and your body is getting stiff!LOL!!
I have been known to hold up my hand with the universal symbol of a pistol, and usually that gets the message across:rolleyes: Although one time I had to show a couple of smart ass hoods I had the real thing with me before they got off my ass.

Side mirror on my coupe never bothered me at night. Never had the problem, so I never had to figure it out....
I guess for night driving, you could just adjust the side mirror a little bit so you wouldn't get the glare, but would have to move your head back or forward to see behind you.

The positive of modern headlights is when using them, they are Great ! The negative, being in front of them or driving toward them, they're terrible. I, like a lot of Mature Car Crazys have acquired Night Vision, because of this, I don't drive at night for long distances anymore, wife drives or I stay overnight and come home during daytime, a small inconvenience to pay. For my Merc, I found a wideview curved snap over mirror w/ a blue tint that seems to work for night time at O'Reilly's for $20, looks OK to me, my Fuzzy Dice draw your eyes anyway.

  27. For you geezers (70+) get your eyes checked for cataracts. They kill you for night driving. Just had my second eye done and it's a whole new world out there.

I have the same problem in my 31 coupe. Headlights behind me and coming at me reflect off the interior of all the glass. Drives me crazy. I think the pull down shade on the back window was meant to eliminate this very issue.

If it was available with a day/night mirror I try to find one,my 37 Chevy p/u never came with a inside mirror and did not have that problem until I added one and still looking for one for my 55 sunliner but for now the slightly yellowing plastic rear window helps cut the glare.

I'm 32 and I can tell you that night driving my corvair sedan around is difficult from the lights behind me.
