You know I have always been a go fast guy. I have had a lot cool cars but they have all sort of fell to the go fast side. Currently I have a killer straight axle gasser, it was a brand new build and a low to mid 10 second car last year but over the winter we made several upgrades and now this rocket ship is likely headed to the 8s. We will only go to a handful of vintage races this year (4 if we are lucky). The rest of the time it will go to car shows and cruise in events etc. But it is a fire breathing dragon on the street!

Lately I have been thinking I would really like to have just a cool hot rod (probably still a bit on the fast side) but not crazy over the top. Something we could show more than go. I said that to Dad last night as we were bolting the 8-71 supercharger on the Austin. He said I am getting old...

  3. I don't think so, you definitely have the fast side covered!
Will one of those events be the HAMB Drags?

We are all getting old, that's the positive, the negative is We are getting old ! For myself time has been has/is flying by and working on projects is getting to be a chore, fun part fading Fast, about done for me, it's a huge job just keeping up with everything, family, house, yard, maintenance, car maintenance AND the part of everything taking so much longer to do is frustrating, between can't find what I just had in my hand, put things away, where? By the way, Kool Gasser ! Never had one as a racer or cruiser.

What did you do to fix the bouncing chassis? I remember if from the HAMB Drags last year, looked like it was going to be pretty fast once you got it lined out.

When you consider the alternative, getting old is pretty darned good!

I would love to have a turn-key full sized cruiser. Not that I would give up our '41 Willys. But on a HOT Summer day/evening it would be nice to cruise in comfort in something like a lowered custom [ '59 Caddy rag top or a late '40's/early '50's Buick - Olds - Pontiac rag top.... DREAM ON !!!

Completely rebuilt the rear suspension. HAMBer diagnosed our hopping as quarter eliptic spring system mounted above the axle line. We thought we were being innovative...bottomline, you should never try to reinvent the wheel! New set of Posie Quarter Eliptic springs installed below the axle line (Thanks to the HAMBer we basically mirrored Mazmanian's Willys set up.

I'd say you may be getting to the "been there done that" stage where you have pretty well accomplished what you dreamed of doing as far as go fast down the quarter is concerned and that car is getting dialed in to where you don't have to spend every moment and a lot of spare dimes on it It can go out and make quick passes at those limited events you figure on taking it to but a low stress cruiser would be a lot of fun.

The um.... scrutiny of the local police every time I cruised around, and the growing pile of broken parts made me old a long time ago. Now I just have a fun cruiser, and the wife and I rather enjoy the mellow ride. When I'm by myself, I can still get rubber in second gear and get 17 mpg around town doing it.
There is a young man here in town that always says; "It's a lot more fun driving a slow car fast, then it is driving a fast car slow." He is right. You have your fast car when you feel the need for speed. Having something that is not fast that you can drive fast and only you know it, relieves a lot of pressure. But, then I'm old. Gene

I'd just like to be able to afford to make my 57 Chevy a gasser or buy a blower for the 427 that's in it but at this point after 5 back surgeries ( 5 at one time the last time) and open heart surgery it's taken its toll on me so if u think ur getting to old then there's no question u already are, if I had 10% of the cash most of u guys have in ur cars my car would be done and I'd be going fast lol if ur thinking of slowing down then you probably already have, what about building a cruiser and dragging ur gasser out when u fell the need, sounds like u need a reminder of what got this far with ur gasser, u'll slow down when they kick dirt in ur face but until then old guys kickin ass on the streets or strip are the coolest thing to watch, drag on brother, oh ya how about a pic of this car ur talking about I'd like to see what it looked like then and now, butch

I got tired of beating on my street/strip car and living with the compromises that came along with it. The big motor came out and I dropped a 283 in it. I'm working on things like heater, electric choke, better shocks, etc.

At the same time the big motor is going into a dedicated drag car that doesn't have to be street friendly.

Does that make me old? It feels like it. I suppose with age comes wisdom, right?
