I've got an old flathead v-8 and 3 speed trans that was put into my Merc that I recently purchased and I need help identifying what the motor originally came out of. The previous owner said he bought the running flatty and 3-speed trans and put it in with the intention of restoring the old car to original. He couldn't get his project off the ground so his loss became my gain. I, personally, do not want to keep the flatty or trans in it and I would like to sell it. I will post pictures tomorrow but I'd like to have an idea of how to i.d. what I have. I'm a newbie when it comes to old flatheads and I really need the motor and trans outta the way so I can put in the 350/350 combo. If there is a certain picture or number in a certain place that could get to help you guys id this car let me know. I'll take the pic or whatever needs to be done so I can get it out of my car and into the hands of someone who knows what they have. Thanks
Radiator hose location is the easiest way to id. 49-53 had them towards the front of the heads while the earlier ones are in the center. Head castings are good, too. They'll be easy to read large letters in the center of the head. This oughta get ya started.
Your question is a typical question that comes up at least once a week here. Did you do a search? Is the three speed a floor shift or side shift? Do the hoses coming out of the heads, come out at the front or middle? Is the distributor on the front centre or is it on an angle in front of the right hand head? Can you see a number cast in to the bellhousing on the rear of the motor? After you look at those items, look at this www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_home.htm
I'm definately going to sell the flatty and trans. My wife's grandad, who has been a car guy his whole life, said that the motor was in great shape and that I shouldn't get rid of it. We put a wrench on it and turned the motor many times with no hang ups or rough spots. Personally, I have no use or room for the motor. I'll try to post pictures today if you're interested. PM me.
Here's the pictures of the flaty. Anyone interested or if you just have any information what this could have came out of just let me know. Thanks.
It's a '48 & up truck or a '49 & up Ford car or '49 & up Mercury. Don't know about the ******. Could this motor have originaly come in your Merc? I would keep it in there if it was me but then again I love flatties in Mercs.
Here's a link to the flaty thats for sale, with pictures of the only numbers I could fine. This may help some of you identify it. Thanks again. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=102928
Some trucks came with 8BA heads on them, at least my flattie did. Everything was 8RT except the heads. It was Canadian made, so they were probably getting rid of excess castings Flatman
http://flatheaddrag.com/birthday.html If its an original the above link will ID it. Factory rebuilt or crates have none or undecipherable code. A 350/350 is for checkbook rodders, kiddies and girls. Any Ford product in that Merc would be an improvement.

Amen to that ! Flatman[/quote] Look. I'm not here for you opinions on what I should put in MY CAR. I don't bash what you have so just everyone keep their negative comments to themselves, thanks. The way I see it, I'm 26 yrs old and you should be appreciative that I'm not out flying down the highway in a riceburner with a coffee can for a muffler. What's it to anyone what I want in my car?? If the post was "Tell me what you think about me putting a 350 in my Merc" then yea, say something about it. Otherwise...find someone else to bash.
