I just joined H.A.M.B. and posted an intro, and was asked by a member if I'd post a couple of my illustrations. I'm a second generation car illustrator (see my intro), and rather feel a bit, uh, inadequate, to be thinking I've got much to say here in this forum other than I REALLY like to illustrate cars and planes and am admittedly a bit of an art snob so I hold myself to high standards. Here are a couple of my paintings. I'd really love to hear about and see anyone's favorite car art and artists, actually. My dad drew for a couple of magazines in the early 60's, including some of the CarToons and the old Taco minibike logo.
Welcome to the HAMB. Very nice work. You should post some of your work on the FAS (every Friday). A lot of great artists post their stuff for everyone's viewing pleasure. We'd all appreciate whatever you have to offer. If you want to post some of your dad's work along with yours, that would be great too! -Marc.
Hi, Donal. I liked your intro, and your drawings/renderings. I checked out your site, it's impressive. I went to art school in the 80's, I was an illustration major. (I didn't have the personality to freelance), so did other things. Keep up the good work!
Frank Bursinger was an illustrator for the LA Times for over 30 years. He loved to paint cars too. he did this painting of my '28 Tudor in 1973.
Wow, you are very talented! The one of Ron's coupe is very cool. Here's one of my favorites of Jerry Moreland's Project 40 done by Kenny Youngblood back in the 80's:
...definitely check out the Friday Art Show tomoro... ..here's my version of Moreland's 40... ...and Fat Jack's 46...I changed the wheels on em...
Nice work! You want to have some serious fun, your pictures would really lend themselves well to chisel-tip art markers. They are a kick to work with and the effects, when you figure them out, are awesome. Your line work matched with markers would be stunning. Make a couple of prints of the line work, practice on a few of them, and you'll see what I'm talking about. Great artist fun.
durbustweeb,...do you have a brand of those markers that you prefer?...or do I just ask for chizel-tip art markers?...always lookin for different ways to do things, and hopefully improve... thanks.
Prismacolor and Copic are the top brands. Goldenrod and/or Spanish Orange, an extremely light blue and perhaps a couple of either warm or cold greys for chrome would be a great way to experiment with that particular picture you posted. A good art store will have these and a sheet of paper to see what the real values/density are. Just be aware you're going to screw up a few pictures, hold your breath, and enjoy. There are a bunch of YouTube videos of people using these art markers to color their auto illustrations. Just copy and paste "car illustration art marker" into the YouTube search window and you'll get a few really nice videos to show what really fine illustrators are doing.
Well, there was only ONE Ed Roth, and unfortunately anyone who was to do anything remotely similar would simply be labelled a "wannabe" and received unfavorable comparisons. Ed Roth is like Coke or Kleenex... anything else just isn't "right"!
