I hate the look of speakers sticking up in the rear package tray. I was pondering a flush mount, but trying to work out a covering for the package tray that allows sound. What did you guys do?
Mine are flush mounted in the package tray with old-style grilles. Also have 2 small speakers mounted under the dash.
How about finding a couple dash grills for a 55-56 and retrofitting them into the package tray? It would be of the period and once it was painted would blend in nicely.
This is a finished car, so welding is out. I ***ume you are talking about the factory slotted piece on the dash?
Yes. Don't they come out? I was thinking they were held in by screws. If you have to cut holes for speakers it wouldn't be too hard to put a couple in.
Hey Root Do this: Remove the package tray in back. It will slide forward & out. Underneath you'll find factory cutouts where speakers will fit. Make a new (or use yours) and cut out the holes for the speakers you want to use. I'm going to use some 6 x 8's. Next, mount the speakers into the tray. Next, go to the hardware store and buy a couple of square feet of 1/2" mesh rabbit screen. Cut the screen to fit larger than the holes for the speakers and secure the screen to the tray. I drilled holes, used some flat washers & small screws with nuts underneath. Next, get some indoor/outdoor carpet in your color choice, cut to fit the tray & glue it down in a few areas. Speakers are now totally invisible & sound goes thru perfectly. I did this on my 39 coupe, and am going to do it on my 56 Victoria. The package tray on my 56 is Masonite & should be easy to do. My 39, I made the tray from thin plywood. Hope this helps Jim
You could go old style 1950's-60's and get a mirror muff and then to a fabric store for matching rear deck fur. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/...q4GeD6zi8bywDosSauKkwIaNB4BNJmGiHtRoCMTnw_wcB Jo Ann's Fabric stores has a lot of colors:https://www.google.com/search?q=pac...m=isch&q=fake+fur+fabric&imgrc=0iFI5IdRmAuEnM:
For front speakers you could mount them in that square opening in the door like pictured below, which is what I did in my '54. These will fit http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Lanzar-...b74fb9ac990c1872a9ef8a&pid=100505&rk=1&rkt=1& But to keep water and dust out use these baffles: http://www.ebay.com/itm/VXT55-XTC-U...194409?hash=item2a6a4f1669:g:aewAAOSwjXRXYYLk
For front, remove the speaker grill from underneath the dash (2 nuts). Remove speaker & replace with a dual unit. Or, do door speakers (I hate those), but some folks like them. (Unless you can hide them completely). Difficult to do with vinyl upholstery. If you can find room, put narrow, thin speakers behind the kick panels, then cover the panels with fabric & you're done. Not too much room there. On my 39 coupe, I had six speakers, all hidden: 2 behind the fabric headliner, 2 in the rear pkg tray and 2 in the kick panels. Radio/stereo in the glove box, radio delete plate in the dash. Very cool
Option 2: home speaker grille material to cover vs. screen I don't like the look of speaker grilles in the back shelf, like them hidden, clean look
I found some red speaker grille cloth on ebay. Just not sure if it will hold up in the sun. https://www.amazon.com/Stereo-Speaker-Grill-Fabric-Stretches/dp/B00MG080WW
