I saw this pic on the Hwy 395 board awhile back. Seems like some disgruntled Owens Valley folk attempted to blow up the L.A. aquaduct somewhere around Independence, CA. Somehow the Feds got wind of it and stopped them. This was the perps tools of choice!!

DDT insecticides were readily available but that wasn't all that hardware stores sold back then. Sticks of dynamite were available over the counter (at one point you did have to sign a ledger) to use for things like blowing stumps out. When I was a kid it seemed like every farmer had dynamite lying around in a barn somewhere. In the 1970s I remember being asked by a widow to remove some old sticks that her late husband had stored in their garage years ago. Looking back it's amazing just how open everything was decades ago without very much bad stuff ever happening.

My Dad used to sell lead cyanide powder in his hardware store for pest control. For some reason, that went out of style in the 70's or thereabouts. He's moved to Florida and we decided to sell the house up here (Connecticut) last year. In cleaning it out, I noticed a can of the cyanide on the shelf in the garage. I really wanted the can as a "curio or relic" but... um... dealing with whatever may be left in it.... I left that one for my sister, brother-in-law and younger brother to take care of; they seemed to be in charge.
