Anyone have photos of this Early Times Fat Jack '29 roadster? JimA?

  1. Why would they be pissed? Those cars are really benchmarks. We ALL want to see the book Jim.:)

Many of them would be embarassed by how far they and the club have fallen since the glory days. :p And anyway, the first rule of ET is that there is no ET.

You can't say ONE GUY is your hero without pissing a bunch of others off. And giving one guy credit for something usually ends up in 10 others contesting it. With the heat I've taken already after thousands of hours researching and documenting the history of the club it's best to leave it simmer until the day when I might be a member and not just an "outsider".

  4. Jeez Jim, its always about you isnt it?:D

    Yes, i am kidding.

Jim, with the passing of members it will become increasing more difficult to document ( I am sure a number of the members are getting up there in age plus the 70's were rough on alot of folks). You really need to start doing the interviews, photos (of what they look like now for a comparison) and start collecting information. It is an important period of history in hotrodding and should be captured.. Much like you and Jeem.. I may be partials as I really dig the look of the ET cars..

Pre48... thanks for sharing the info.

Problem is I KNOW I could sell maybe 50 books- none of the book companies will touch something without something like a 1,000 units presale. If I do it it will be on my own dime and I will surely loose money on it- I don't have any to burn until the SO-CAL thing kicks into gear.

Jim, I think you might be surprised at how many you would sell. how many ET members are there plus friends and family and the rest of us who love the look... plus those that just like to buy hotrod books.. you might be surprised

Jim, I'd buy a copy of the ET book, I followed a lot of the cars in the magazines, they just had a special look. Sure would bew nice to see every car that was in the club, and how they look today.

Most are unrecognizable today as they were not treated as any "landmark" at the time. Don't have many pictures of cars in their current state.
Even as recently as a few years ago one of the really cool early cars I REALLY liked was torn apart and parted out just to use the body. It was a classic E.T. car- forever gone now.

Sorry about the photo disappearing. I'll transfer it to the HAMB on Monday so it won't go away next time 10 folks download the Mike Bishop V8 porting manual and I exceed my throughput allowance.

Jim - I'd buy five of them, even if it was written wrong enough to piss off the old guys. The Early Times cars are really my favorites. They came at a time where the roots were still well regarded, and new styles were readily accepted, and before everything went to the red/tan/small Chevy formula. Lots of cool cars in the group. I really hope you don't give it up, sounds like you're closer to getting it done than anyone...

Your welcome, Burger. I'm glad I was able to provide some clarity and accuracy regarding the '28 model A Ford roadster. I hope it was enough information to fill in most of the blanks.

  17. We also had a similar threas about your dads Orange 46 a couple weeks back..........................care to elaborate on that one?:D

Sorry if I doubled up my message, modernbeat; I guess my replys aren't quick enough. No, I don't beleive there are any chassis photos that exist. The auto. trans. is column shifted (possibly a 70's/80's era GM van tilt column w/o ignition switch; dad sez it had cruise control, too). Floors in body aren't flat or raised; rumble seat trunk floor does have alum. sheet metal floors. The engine/trans. combo. isn't raised, either. Probably 80% of the chassis components, both ft. & rear, were fabricated by "Fat Jack" (ft. hairpins, rear ladder bars, panhard bars, rear coil over mounting brackets, trans. crossmember, etc.). The rear end housing was narrowed, & the dropped tube axle was bent to his spec.'s at the time he was building it (E.T. member Mark Krutz pal Joe Scotland built a bitchin' maroon '28-'29 model A touring w/mag Halibrands around 1980 that may have had one of those ft. axles; the car looked similar to Krutz' brown model A tudor, but much lower...). That about as technical as I can get, modernbeat. You'd have to speak to FJ for further detail. Hope that answers your questions. Respond if you like, & I'll get back at you when I can...

For posterity on this old thread about my all time favorite Model A roadster, here is a photo I took of the '28 at the NSRA Western Nats in Merced in 1980 - anyone remember Motating to Merced...?;)

Damn I miss that look! One of my favorites for sure. I can't be the only one that remembers the "black out" phase that allot of the E.T. boys went through about that time... You know, about the same stance as this car, Buicks,tru-spokes or Halibrands, and most of what would normally be chrome painted black to match the body. What, about '79 - '83 or so before Hight tech and fat fendered stuff really took off. Don't know why, but I always kinda considered this car to be an early version of that because of the painted windsheild posts...

Sure hope the wiring gets sorted out sometime soon... Would love to see it rolling around somewhere.

An Early Times book would be one of those things that would really work for me. Not one of those, "Oh, that's cool, whatever", things, but a "Leave me alone, I'll be spending the next 2 days going through this book" type of thing. Thom Taylor. He'd be a good choice for putting one together.
