Back in November, I put a Saginaw 3 speed behind my 350, using a couple of adapters that allowed me to use the stock clutch pedal linkage. I've been hammering the miles on the coupe ever since. Yesterday, after leading 178 cars about 5 miles into our SWMO Hot Rod Hundred Reliability Run, I believe I sheared the Grade 5 bolt that I used to pin the clutch fork to the shaft. I wound up not being able to get it to RPM sync into 2nd gear, but I was able to drive it about 30 miles back into my own driveway, park it, and take the '40 stake truck to meet up with the group of cars as they came into Monett, MO.

Looks like the engine and transmission are coming back out in the next week or two, and I'll try a Grade 8, this time.

Started with a couple of different '40 plates & found a few more. Before I knew it there were 20 & then it was game on. For awhile the growing collection gave me something to look for at swap meets but it took E-Bay to get to where it's at now. I guess it took a couple of years. Would still like to find '40 rarities like Alaska, Puerto Rico, Guam, Canal Zone, Philippines but the prices are way high. Thanks for the compliment.

  3. I took the front bumper off my 40 38 years ago and have been running that way ever since. I kept the rear bumper on though, thinking that I can control what I run into, but not what runs into me!

  4. I am inspired; got my first one on eBay the day you posted your collection.

$6 including shipping and I have already received it and half an hour later had it straightened it out. 1 down 49 to go.

47 more to go. There were 48 states in 1940. Good hunting.

I've got one '40 standard chrome headlight door that I bought years ago at the Frog Follies. Figured I'd find a matching one somewhere down the line to put on my standard coupe, but haven't seen another. Does anyone have one or know where I can get one? IMG_2585.JPG

Bob Drake offers them at $150 a set. If you want them plated you would probably have to spend at least that to get them plated

IMG_1359.JPG Went to lunch with a couple of buddies today and my friend asked me to photograph his new '32. I told him this was the best shot I got of his car! He didn't get it....

One of the shots that @travisfromkansas shot during our 4th Annual SWMO Hot Rod Hundred. This was a few miles before the clutch linkage broke in my coupe, leaving me stuck in 3rd gear. Of all the days that ol' beater could have chosen to break, it decided to wait until I had a group of 177 other cars following it on a "RELIABILITY run". LOL

I'll grant that you have a better chance of controlling what happens in front than behind, but it rules out parallel parking or parking in lots with nose to nose parking unless you back into the spot;)
Plus around here, if you leave a gap in front to a point where you're sure to be safe in multi lane travel, you can be sure some SOB is gonna jump in front of you:mad:

An embarrassing and frustrating moment I am sure, but at least you could limp home home and grab a spare 40 and get back in the action! I hope your fix of the clutch goes well and you get that coupe back on the road pronto. Did you have someone take pictures in your absence?

  13. Hey '39 Guy, I am TERRIBLE about not taking pictures during the SWMO Hot Rod Hundred. I have a sense of responsibility to try and greet as many of the participants that I can and such. Consequently, I don't really get to see the cars like I would like to. I usually have to wait until they show up in my facebook newsfeed. (If ya are on the FB, feel free to send me a friend request, and you'll be able to see the event photos)

Here's a couple more of Travis' shots from last Saturday.

Dan and Jack Hay came up with "The Varmit" and surprised the daylights out of me.

LaVerne Kivett also brought his '40 Standard to make the run in.

I see you have a good set of priorities when putting on a run. I did find that a few members had posted some pictures on the HAMB. Good to see the Dan and the Varmit out for the day.

  15. After I traded '40's, Dennis Parks caught this shot of my daughter and me rolling by in the '40 stake truck just south of Monett, MO.

I don't doubt your statement Lan Kustom. It is amazing what we do or spend to get the exact look we want on our cars.....

Those are Deluxe . You have to have Standard rings chrome plated. They come raw to paint like origionals were. There is a difference between the Standard and Deluxe rings. The park lights trim is a different shape and are molded into the rings on Deluxe. The trim on the Standard has a more art deco look and are a separate piece attached to the rims. My favorite but I like the whole assemblies chromed. Small difference to some but a big deal to me.

At Crane, Missouri city park Southwest Missouri Hot Rod Hundred last Saturday. Gotta fix the drooping door handle, install different wheels, and lower the front end. Installed side trim (thanks okiedokie), hood trim, wipers and front bumper since last year's SWMO Hot Rod Hundred.

Hey Duncan, I don't know if you happened to see the photos that Dennis posted on FB, but here's a shot of you going by him and Sam out near Halltown.

He got ya down south of Monett, too!

I knew the Standard parking lights were separate, but I never noticed the difference in design. I agree that the Stds are good looking when plated, but I'd hate to double the cost.
