Good deal or Bad Deal? '54 Chev Seat

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by vinnie mack, Apr 9, 2006.

  1. Well I have been looking for a '53 - '54 Chev front seat for my '53 as I wasn't blessed with getting any of the original seats when i got the car. Right now I have an early 60s seat in it and it sits way too high and very uncomfortable so i wanted atleast something i knew would fit in perfect.

A local guy was selling the seat and I went to see it.. good condition with all the pieces but the drivers side is pretty worn. He told me $300CDN for the seat plus has original OEM seat covers in the box unused which i didn't care for.

Now i was kind of amazed that a seat that age in that condition (it's puke green too) goes for that much. He was a really nice guy i didn't get a vibe from him that he was screwing around..

Is this for real or should i find something else that fits??

    Any help would be great.

I'd say it's a bit stiff. '55-'57 two door front seats go for more than that in recoverable condition, but I wouln't want to give anywhere near that for a '49-'54 seat. Keep looking.

  3. Ok thanks for the info.. what would be the ideal price for this seat like 100 - 150? cuz when he said 300 i almost had to sit down.

I guess it depends how badly you want and need it, and how hard are they to find. Seems a little pricey, but if it's the only one around and you really want/need it, buy it. It may take you another 6 - 12 months to find another, and maybe only save $100?

$300 is a bit spendy but if all the trinkets are there and the slider mechanism works good, in the long run, it's not a bad deal. Fabing up brackets to retro-fit another seat really isn't that hard but it takes time that could be better spent on something else. There are a few outfits around here that I'm almost sure have what your looking for infact, there was a 54 split bench at the PIR swap meet yesterday in about the same condition for $200. If your gonna look for something else that will fit however, any seat that is around 54 inches wide, mounts up with the top of the backrest at 30" high and has a 12" height at the front of the seat cushion should work just fine.

Dude, I have three sets of seats for 53-54 chevys, one re-done I will be using. One ok set that I have been using in my 53, and an old front and back seat in a 54 parts car that will need new foam and covers. You can have the old set out of the 54 for free if you can figure out how to get them to your place from Oklahoma.

  7. PM'd you AP and thanks for the info PrimeMover that may come in handy if i have to find one from something else.. the dimensions is what i needed before but money is tight right now I just bought a new car and doing the suspension on the '53 so i'm not too sure about the $300 seat unless i can convince him to lower the price.

in one of tex smiths hotrod mechanix mags he had an article about a 70something chrysler (i think) seat BOLTING in to a 53/54 chev. my mags are deep in storage or i could get more details for ya but if you know someone with a mag collection you could get the info.

Another HAMBer gave me a split 53-54 Chevy bench seat for free a few months ago, I want to use it in my '57 Chevy because mine is missing. The 53-54 ones should be pretty easy to find, I wouldn't pay $300 CDN for one, even though I don't know how much money that is in US dollars. What's the exchange rate at?
