So, I've come across a 1954 Skyliner roof (complete from cowl to catwalk) and I'm trying to see find someone who's swapped this roof on a non-Skyliner car before. My current car is a '54 Coupe. I was oringinlly thinking of just swapping on the gl*** top portion, but I think I hardtop'd coupe (I would maintain the shorter roof) would be cooler (albeit more work). Has anyone seen a roof swap done?

    Thanks,
    Slim

I think the gl*** top portion might look good on a Coupe, there is a '55 Sedan here on the HAMB that has a gl*** roof section but the top is chopped.

Search the web for roof swaps, You'll be amazed at how many are out there. Some good, some bad.

The chop makes it look flattened. I've never been a fan of top chops on '50s and later cars, looks better on a fat fender.

Maybe I'm being too specific when I search. Searching roof swaps seems to bring all kind of unrelated content for me. I guess I was searching more specifically about gl*** top swaps. I'll try rethinking my search.

I do not have any pictures of the car but there was a 54 Merc HT with a gl*** top at a car show in Seattle a couple of years back. It did not look out of place, and fitted right into the roof lines.

It was prolly a Sun Valley. If so the gl*** was factory, not added later.

That maybe possible but that was the first Merc I had ever seen with a gl*** top and the owner didn't know if it came with it or was installed by a previous owner.

    Slim,

Weather its been done or not, it can be done. Using parts from same year cars makes it that much easier.

Starting with only a Hardtop roof makes it a bit difficult to turn your Coupe into a Hardtop, it would be best to use a complete donor car.
Your going to need Hardtop doors with gl***, complete quarter window ***emblies, the quarter panel sheetmetal below the quarter windows and other parts that I'm sure I missed.

I think a Coupe with a gl*** top would be interesting since it was never offered from the factory.

A friend in Colorado has at least one '54 Merc Sun Valley, and I think 2. One restored and the other a parts car or waiting it's turn. I'll try to find pics.

The concept behind a hardtop coupe would be to have a short roof coupe. Not simply a hardtop conversion. Doors and gl*** would be a given, but the quarter windows I ***ume would end up being slide in. Similar to how hardtopped 'mercs were. I realize this is much easier said than done, but it's the concept in my head so far.

I was hoping to find someone who's done the roof swap and could provide the pros and cons.

    Thanks,
    Slim

You could no doubt swap the gl*** part to your coupe but the entire roof would be a different story the hardtops and standard two and four door sedans are probably 7-8" longer from front to rear than the coupe's roof line, measure and compare and you will see.

I'm well aware of how much shorter the roof is and figured a shorter hardtop roof would be in order.
