I would work on the first truck pictured some more. It may take days of hand work but there is still a lot of blue under that rust staining.
I have had mixed results with CLR. The best results so far has been a combination of green pads with CLR or water, rubbing compound and color sanding with super fine grit1000-1500. Then wax. I think you will be really pleased.
That Ford enamel must crack, allowing rust to come through and stain the paint. Most of will come off, it did on my son's 65 . The cab we thought was a whitish gray with the bed bed red. Now it's powder blue and it even shines. If that truck came back. Yours should do much better.
Warning though, it's thin and will require upkeep.

    Hello,
In So Cal, Most of these post-war tract houses had wooden fences, some just friendly picket fences between the yards. With the advent of thugs and yard invaders, the neighborhoods began placing 6 ft.+ high block wall fences to keep the climbing invaders out. There is no foot hold to get to the top and only the super athletic, tall, Spiderman types could actually get over one of these smooth block walls.

Lets say they became burglar/invader, climbing proof. Add in a lockable iron grate, opening fence with a deadbolt lock or automatic opening gate, most backyards were now fairly impenetrable.

But, the block walls did have some positive aspects. In the Westside of Long Beach, the soil around my mother's old house could grow anything by just watering. It was old topsoil from the historic Los Angeles River flood plain from back in the early 1900's, just covering the whole area on its way to the ocean. Now, any plants that grow fast will not knock down a concrete block wall. The wall did give a supreme privacy screen, too.

My (then 70 year old) mother insisted that her old wooden fence be replaced with a 7 foot tall block wall for privacy and security. Since she lived alone in this now, questionable neighborhood, afterwards, she felt somewhat secure. With the advent of these taller block walls, home intrusions became less.
On the automotive end: If any cars were behind these tall walls, they were safer than before. But, on the downside, there were no more cruising excursions down the streets, looking for old cars sitting in backyards, covered with tarps. So, there are positives and negatives.

Solo: NICE F 100 BY THE WAY...They are always cool looking trucks and one of my early favorites from a time growing up. A So Cal preserved vehicle.

Rusty as **** should not be confused with naturally-occurring patina.

  6. Today I spent about a half hour with a wire brush on a drill. I think it looks better. The p*** side was the original paint. the drivers door and cowl section was repaired and repainted in 1963. bull & 56 truck 001.JPG bull & 56 truck 002.JPG bull & 56 truck 003.JPG

  7. At one time a 56 ford big back gl*** truck was a rare find. Then someone started reproducing that big window rear cab section. I guy I know hunted far and wide and bought every big window cab he could find. he fixed all the rust and dents ect. He was gonna resell them. Then the repop came out and ruined his plans. Ive got two more 56.s at my other place. One came from a fertilizer plant. Now it really got (patena) rust. I will take pictures the next time I go over there.

I think El Caballo was talking about using the product CLR on the truck - it's normally used for cleaning rust stains from household fixtures, but also works pretty well for removing that kind of surface rust while leaving the original paint intact.

This thread has a good before and after of the CLR treatment: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum...d-gold-108k-original-miles-patina-rod.520460/

patina is over rated , id rather sand it down and drive it in primer or flatz , than have it look like I cant afford to or don't care to refinish it so it looks good

My '53 in 1980. Fading Rangoon Red over the original Sheridan Blue. Very little surface rust, just old paint. I wanted to paint it, but still in college and no money for those kinds of luxuries!
