I recently picked up a dual quad, tunnel ram, for a small black Ford. It came with two (old but unused) Holley R-23 center squirters, If I got it right, that is a total of 1320 cfm. Seems like an awful lot for a 302. Any opinions. (PS, they don't seem to fit on the manifold, they interfere with each other)
Good example of less is more. Old school says unless this is a helluva an engine that 700-750 should be more than enough so maybe a couple of 390 Holleys would do it. All those squirters would be like having a toilet on the intake.
I agree that the carbs you have are too large. I have Ford tri-power set up that I used, it has a pair of 285cfm and a single 350cfm Holleys and is about as much as a SBF can use. I also have a dual quad set up for my Boss 302, it has two 390 cfm Holleys which might be a little much but it looks bitch'n.
I'm not as sure on that as once was. Jim Loving runs a 96 Pontiac Firebird on El Mirage using two 1050 dominator on a 331" Chevrolet at 196 + mph. Of course he turns it 9500 thru the gears. Just a thought ....
I agree with all. At the risk of offending, those Holley center squirters (IMHO) never were good for driveability. Idle...or wide open was about all they were good for. 390's would work.
If you cannot find 390's search for two 450 cfm Holleys. P.S. the 660's will work....but not on the street without a LOT of tuning....
