Wow, what a coincidence! At about 6:10 it shows Terry Fritch winning compe***ion eliminator....and just this afternoon I met Terry for the first time at a local cruise! He was telling me about the 500 plus Olds engine he's building for his G-body Olds wagon race car....he casts and builds his own Olds heads! That's just too weird! Great footage. Wish I could have been there but I was at Fort Polk, La. I was kinda busy.
Don't know how to describe it but it seems more colorful and raw back then while today's racing seems more sterile. On a side note Rocky, wasn't Ft. Polk right outside Diseaseville?
Great little film clip. This is when I really fell for drag racing. Willys were my favorites early on but then watched a number of early Vettes run and I was hooked. There are a couple of clips of Deloy Naeb in his 1958 Corvette nick named the Pooch running an injected 283. Here is a picture of the Pooch on ebay back in 2009 and a picture as it sits today. Cool record setting car and proof that they also ran these cars compe***ively with blocks to raise the car rather than going straight axle exclusively.
It was the last year for tire smoking Fuelers. Slipper clutches produced the first of many 6 second runs in 1967 and quickly ended that chapter of drag racing history. Thank God the videos will never let us forget how it was.
Yes, I was also there. Spent most of my time back and forth in the pits. Had not got my driver's license yet!
I grew up in Tulsa and was fortunate enough to get to attend all of the World Finals there from 65-68.
