Trying to get a positive ID of this 4/71 supercharger snout. It is 7" for the the housing and the keyed shaft extends another 2.5". The tri plate cove is part of the snout, one piece design. It looks similar to the later reinforced SCoT snout, but this is for a 4/71. I am thinking that it is a Tom Beatty piece. The long keyed shaft is part of my logic. Anybody confirm this or give me any other ideas?
Yep. If you have The Rodders Journal #12, look at the snout on the 6-71 in Tom Beatty's Belly Tank. Looks like a close match to me. 4-71 and 6-71 snouts interchange.
I guess I should have paid more attention to the post I started last week. <TABLE cl***=tborder id=post2414980 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=6 width="100%" align=center border=0><TBODY><TR><TD cl***="tcat2 thead" style="BORDER-RIGHT: #999999 0px solid; BORDER-TOP: #999999 1px solid; FONT-WEIGHT: normal; BORDER-LEFT: #999999 1px solid; BORDER-BOTTOM: #999999 1px solid"> 12-08-2007, 10:46 AM <!-- / status icon and date --></TD><TD cl***="tcat2 thead" style="BORDER-RIGHT: #999999 1px solid; BORDER-TOP: #999999 1px solid; FONT-WEIGHT: normal; BORDER-LEFT: #999999 0px solid; BORDER-BOTTOM: #999999 1px solid" align=right>#15 </TD></TR><TR vAlign=top><TD cl***=alt2 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #999999 1px solid; BORDER-LEFT: #999999 1px solid; BORDER-TOP-STYLE: none; BORDER-BOTTOM-STYLE: none" width=150>lBB41<SCRIPT type=text/javascript> vbmenu_register("postmenu_2414980", true); </SCRIPT> Member <HR style="BACKGROUND-IMAGE: url(hamb/misc/dl.gif); BORDER-TOP-STYLE: none; BORDER-RIGHT-STYLE: none; BORDER-LEFT-STYLE: none; HEIGHT: 1px; BORDER-BOTTOM-STYLE: none">Status: offline Join Date: Apr 2004 Posts: 886 Location: buffalo,ny </TD><TD cl***=alt1 id=td_post_2414980 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #999999 1px solid"><!-- icon and ***le --> Re: Tom Beatty Speed Equipment? <HR style="COLOR: #999999" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and ***le --><!-- message -->I was just looking at this little book from 1958 ***led "How to Build Hotrods" <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->__________________ Ethol says, don't fool with the fuel,Flo <!-- / sig --> </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
That is neat - I thought Beatty as soon as I saw it. I have a similar one I'd like to ID. I'll post pics here later if you don't mind.
Here is mine. Same style of fins but might be a bit thicker and doesn't have the integral cover. (which I would consider a key to placing it as a Beatty part) Does have a neat tensioner though. I've never bothered to measure it. It does have a keyed/tapered shaft. I think it's pretty cool and has definitely seen some use. I actually wouldn't mind IDing either ofthe snouts in the picture... but I ***ume the other one is just a no name sort of street rod part.
Bringing this to the top one more time. I know that tensioner is for a gilmer belt - did Beatty ever use them? Seems everything I've seen is multiple V-belt. Not saying it couldn't have been changed at some point.
Here is some Beatty parts to compare yours to, the fin looks a bit different that goes to the tri plate on the front but there could be more then one style.
Looks simiular to my Beatty setup, however mine has Tom Beatty in raised letters on the plate that bolts to the 4 71. Got part of it dug out this weekend, will try for pics in a couple of days. BTW, mine is a 5 belt drive.
Great pictures! I think we are on the right track. Interesting to see how they are similar but not exact matches to one another. Sixcarb, do you have any specific dimensions on those pulleys that you could provide? Also do you have a picture of the snout without the pulley? I am curious to see if it looks the same. I think that the rib that supports the tri-plate got modified to compensate for different oil fill tube/ fuel pump stand clearance. That rear plate is pretty cool too. I don't have a Beatty one, but I do have a pretty cool (and rare) rear plate for my blower. I'll try to resize it and get it on here tonight. Daveyduece lets see that stuff.
Never seen another one of these . I have only seen the pump drive style. Beatty and Potvin; a winning combination
Here are some pics that daveyduece emailed to me so that I could get them up here. Freakin' cool!!! I'll let him get on here and do the explaining...
1st 4 pics are on a 331 Caddy for mock up pics and measurements. All will go on a built 390 when I get a belt adjuster made. 390 will prob be in my steel roadster. Last 2 pics are of the S.Co.T. thats on my 331 thats been in my 40 coupe since 75 showing more "V belt" driven blowers.
was talking to tom in i think 83 and he showed me the motor out of his camper truck.was the 394 out of his panel/sd. had 10 v-belts and 303 olds in lakester had 12. the wristpin hole in his forged piston was about an inch high from rockin around so many years. motor was in his shop in sun valley ca and lakester was in his ex-wifes garage in burbank or glendale. we actually discussed running the lakester. a friend named 40 jack has his panel/sd and is called colorado coolaid. coors fan. he helped me w/my indian bonneville saltflat bike.current bonneville/muroc record holder. they credit tom for starting the blown street machine thing by putting gmc on his new 40 ford in the 40's. believe his panel/sd was a 39. he used to p*** people towing lakester to utah at 120. just some info..merry christmas..
'just flipping through G****'s blower book and saw this picture on page 17 looks just like Brock's picture in the lead post caption calls it a J.E.M.
I think I noticed a Beatty Gilmer drive engine in a '50's book recently. If you look through the "most powerful flathead" issues of R&C, covering the engine that broke the supposed 1G barrier at the drags, it mentions the first use of a Gilmer belt on a blower setup in 1954.
I guess it's a long shot, anybody have a snout like this I can take a mold off of?, I'm trying to clone this motor below, so far I have this to the left, I have the Isky Drive and snout, I need the Gilmer, I could trade or? Old thread I know, any help?
