I need to mount a 3 3/8" gauge cup on my steering column without scarring the paint. I've seen no options other than use a hose clamp or screw it on. I'm concerned about clearance between the outer column and the steering shaft if I try to screw it on. Suggestions appreciated.

Is that an aftermarket column? Looks like it's a tight fit, when you're driving.

It is an Ididit column connected to a Saginaw steering gear with a rag joint. The steering wheel feels like it is in the normal position.

Right on, maybe it's the angle.

I've used a couple of layers black electrical tape underneath the screw clamp. You could use pieces of inner tube or other thin rubber underneath the clamp.

I guess I'll have to wait until it gets here to see what fits where. The tube section is short before it goes into the dash. I can see under the funnel shaped transition to the tube and it has clearance for screws but it appears to be a cast material and I'm not sure of the strength.
