    Hi All,

I have a 57 Dodge 315 Baby Hemi in a 31 Ford Coupe. I was told by Hot Heads to use a high zinc content Valvoline VR1 oil to help with better lubrication in old engines, Does anyone have experience with this stuff or do you recommend something else? Sounds like the zinc is really good for the valve train..

    Thanks.

I've used VR 1 for years. Good zinc and phosphorous levels.

I've used it with excelent results. That is, little to no material on the magnetic drain plug...vs. other oils.

BUT, it IS racing oil, therefore, it needs to be changed more often. I changed mine at 3000 to 3500 miles.

  5. I have talked to Lucas & they told me I could use any Oil I want
as long as I use 2 oz. of Break in oil with any Oil Change
I like Castrol 10/30 motor oil with 2 oz. of Break in Oil
Most Oils Don't have enough Zink in there Oil
    Just my 3.5 cents

Brad Penn has the zinc levels you need. Used to be labeled Kendall. I've been using Brad Penn for years.

I've been using the vr1 for years. My engine builder highly recommends it. I use it my stroked out 427fe. Flat tappet solid lift cam. Also in a couple other older style engines. Amazon seems to be the best price and availability.

Brad Penn offers a lot more viscosity options than VR1.

Zddp is the additive you are looking for. We run 15W-40 Rotella and add a zinc additive.

Just don't run water like most car manufacturer's want today. I run non synthetic 15W-40 in everything I own from our Flathead powered 34 ford to my wife's 6.2L L92 powered 07 Escalade.

Thank you all for your opinions. I will purchase the 10W30 VR1 Valvoline off amazon here in Canada. Its got the higher Zinc content which makes it good for pre unleaded motors.

You will be fine with VR-1. I've run it in my flat tappet SBC for years.

Nothing is better than "Moly"MoS2 molybdenum disulfide as a anti scuff, anti gall and friction fighter..And Torco is the king of oil due to its MPZ Content. M is Moly, P is phosphorous, and Z is Zinc..I learned about this oil from Fred L****n of the L****n & ***mings land speed streamliner record holder way back in the '80's when he worked at Moon and was hanging out Lettering stuff for Dean Moon...I have used it ever since.

I used 10w-30 VR1 to break in my 355 and switched to Brad Penn 10w-40 for the next 2 changes. I'm changing it to a Kendall 20w-50 for the summer, a high ZDDP oil.

I'm also sold on VR1. I run it in my built flatheads with zero problems. To each his own , but I use
straight 50 weight VR1 racing oil
