I can clearly see the O/P's point. $40.98 or $14.00? Same part, arrival time the same, still in a box through this massive infrastructure described above. What do we get for the additional $27.00? For that money it's almost next day. Don't think I don't get it, I do. I ship and have things shipped in dozens of times a year. The only time to shop price is when you know you need that generic everybody's-is-the-same part, and then it boils down to who's closer so you get it sooner and cheaper. Sometimes it's even worth an 10 spot for the shipping and time savings.
As Ash Williamns would say, "Shop smart, shop S mart..." or not.

Thanks guys for all the replies and info. Its all relative to the individual. We will all spend and justify whatever price each of us feels is suitable. To each their own and spend accordingly. You get what you pay for, even if the part is cheaper somewhere else. You get the feeling its better because it costs more or delivery was more, whether it is or not.

Thanks again for the pointers and keeping the information straight.

Long time Mac's buyer, not so much since bought out by Eckler's . Too many wrong parts lately. Then have to send back through Eckler's to Mac's and wait and wait and wait.............. Still waiting for some 57 Chevy parts from Eckler's I ordered 2 years ago. They have no record of the order even after I sent them invoice . Luckily it was only a small amount. Can get parts from Classic Industries quicker from California than Eckler's whose warehouse is 3 hours from my shop.

Does Mac's have anything you can't get somewhere else? My first experience with them 15 years ago wasn't great. Ordered a carpet set for a 64 sedan. Quality was kind cheap, oh well. But then after a couple months, the blue carpet had turned yellow where the sun shined on it. Called them and they said it was an outside vendor, not their problem. See ya.

For me, its not so much the shipping charges, its the quality of the part or the finish, and the fact that I get a lot of wrong parts for my wagon. Granted, its a wagon, and a 4 door, but I'm very specific when ordering. Most vendors think any 4 dr model part will work, not so. I've bought new chromed parts from Carpenter that started pitting inside my house( had to be only flash chromed). I am about to rebuild my front suspension, but don't want cheap rubber***** from india or china. Dont want to redo it next year. Just bought all the rubbers for the rear leaf springs, bushings.pads, etc from Concours Parts because I heard they were quality. Everything fit, except the front leaf spring bushings( bag stamped "made in india") were incorrect, way too small a diamater, need to return with a pic of the correct one. Got the correct one from Rare Parts Co, Stockton CA. Not cheap, but rep did say they manufacture their parts in Stockton and use quality rubber. But they dont make all the suspension parts, just rare parts. And I did discuss making our wagons unobtanium weatherstripping, since they do make their rubber parts, not interested.
Since Ecklers took over Macs its been downhill in my book. Now where did I put that formula for flubber?

If it's $219 on the website and $40 shipping, wouldn't it be more cost efficient to get it from Ebay for $230 and FREE shipping and save $30?

I've dealt with Mac's with no problems to raise a flag over. I try to buy most of my name brand parts off eBay with free or little shipping. I also buy from Bob Drake, but my biggest****** about Drake is the stuff I need always seems to be out of stock.

Try buying from the other side of the world !!! $200 for the part and $300 for shipping and insurance INCLUDING TAX (because vendor cant be bothered filling out the paperwork to exempt it ) THEN when parcel arrives 6 months after your credit card was debited, there is tax to pay here on part , freight and insurance ..15%, plus clearance fees etc etc... It's all expensive here if you want to own a piece of American car culture. for example a new Chevy Silverado 3500 diesel sells here for NZ$170k, about US $ 120k.

McDonalds I call them, cheap stuff slow and low quality. Eliminate that part of your search and you will be way ahead already. If you find what you need and know its good, pay up and move on.

  12. The Top dog Silverado costs about 12,000 hours minimum wage in states and about the same amount of NZ minimum wage hrs as well.

What is a top dog Silverado?
    Are we talking truck?
If so that would have no relevance to this discussion on shipping hot rod parts or other things to distant parts of the world.

The point was the shipping costs, BUT the reason for using that as an example is that it is easier to compare the price of a new truck than say a 36 coupe or a 29 A roadster, ...while they are certainly more expensive here the price in the USA varies widely whereas the Silverado is more or less the same across the USA. It is not sold here by GM so the costs are all on the NZ buyer ! minimum wages dont compare directly either, we don't have ANY tipping here, what you earn is what you take home ...LESS 29% tax, plus a flat rate of 15% tax on everything you spend.
Anyway this is way out of hand , SHIPPING is shipping and has to be paid if you want to get anything from elsewhere, the way it is shipped and the price is largely up to the shipper and his circumstances so in reality it is impossible to compare one with another. Just go for the one that suits YOUR circumstance.
