41 Ford coupe 289/C-4 9in. Stock frontend with stock bones, not split. What would be the least expensive, correct way to lower one? MII are pricey, subframe isn't really in the future, so what about the standard reverse-eye spring and maybe a dropped axle? Anyone have or done one? How'd it handle/ride? The 9" is located about 3/4" too far forward, but that seems like an easy fix. And, as for pics....anyone have their favorite pics of 41 coupes done nose down, hotrod style, or taildraggin, but not Chopped? Talk to me...
Dropped front axle, a reversed eye spring, & some gas shocks should get it done. Chassis Engineering offers a complete kit for somewhere around $700. JH
differnt front leaf and drop axel should get your nose down. havnt got a pic right now but theres a stock 32 5 window in town thats got just that done with the stock fenders and bones and its sittin preety low with no trouble ill post the pix later if you want tim
What I'm wondering is, since it already has the 289/C4, I have to split the bones in order to do the dropped front, right? There seems to be enough room under the oil pan, so.. I know this may be old news to most here, but I've never done anything like this before. Thanks guys
Seems to me, if the bones fit now, a dropped axle would have no effect; reversed spring eyes would move the bones up a bit, but you should be able to make a reasonable guesstimate of space...if there's a problem, use the dropped axle to get down to avoid the splitting.
I agree that a dropped axle. reversed eye spring and stock woshbone is the way to go. My '41 Tudor has a split bone - only because the builder was used to doing it that way. It also give clearance to drop trans pan to change fluid and filter. 41 Dave
I'll throw in another vote for the dropped axle. Maybe pull a few leafs from the spring or get a reversed main leaf. You shouldn't need to split the bones, it should be a bolt in deal.
kenny's rod shop in ohio has a mono leaf spring for cheap.....it will lower the front and is adjustible with shims...we just put one on a 37 truck and a 37 sedan.......everything seems to be fine the 37 sedan has a 4inch drop axel too.......it is real low and has unsplit bones
Along with the dropped axle....why not a bit longer shackles and a panhard bar to eliminate any side-sway ?
Grumpy, Speedway motors sells a front cross member that will lower your car by 3 inches in the front. It's a real bear to change that cross member, but every thing simply bolts back on just like it came off once the cross member is changed. I put that cross member in my 41, but I can't tell you how it's going to ride yet. Most of my car is in pieces at this point. Mike
Well, since this is back up top.. I think what I'm going to do is just put a poisie spring and new shackles in. We've decided that I only want it to drop 2.5-3in. at most. I found a pair od steel skirts and decided that a slight drop in front and 4" drop in the rear will give me a nice mild kustom look. I'd love to have it chopped, but that's not in the cards anytime soon, so a mild tail dragger look will have to do. I'm having a hell of a time finding pics of coupes done this way. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places.
Check out car nut he has lots of photos. I'm going rerverse eye dropped front and tire rake on my 41 business coupe. I want to get that basic nose down hot rod stance. I was building a 350 for it but found a flat six and going with that. I'd like to see pix of yours, good luck. Mark
I think that chassis engineering sells a reverse eye main leaf for your front end.. use it and several of the leaves from the old spring and lower the car that way.. (i did this the 1st time around on the 40.. the main leaf was like 60.00..) I would avoid spliting the bones.. the car will ride better as it is.. and the hard part of this entire job will be reattaching the spring to the bones and removing the perch pins from the wishbone and axle.. search for "perch pin" I think someone posted IDEAS as to how to remove them.. I have NEVER had ANy Luck at that job. sawzall
