I'm looking at a local H.A.M.B. friendly car that has a 225 w/3 on the tree. The owner claims that it has a new clutch, but when giving it gas in 1st, it starts making this clanking noise that sounds like pressure building and being released, if that makes any sense. It increases based on speed, but goes away in 2nd or 3rd. It is also present in Reverse. Any ideas? Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Bad 1st & reverse slider gear .....tooth/teeth missing? Bad bearings in cluster gear/shaft? Possibly bad bearings in input gear to main shaft junction? Maybe, but not as likely I think, bad u-joint(s). Needs tranny work from the sound of it.. Ray
Assuming it's tranny work (which isn't my forte), does that type of work take bank nowadays? Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Depends on a number of factors. Can you source a used tranny at a reasonable price? Do you have any car guy friends competent and willing to work on your transmission? Do you have skills and tools to remove and reinstall the transmission if you find another or someone to rebuild yours? My guess is a professional shop rebuild would be pretty pricey in the LA market.
