How far is the shifter location on a T-5 (S-10?) Transmission from the bellhousing? I have an S-10 T5 back home I can grab, but heard they won't work in my '64 Chevy C-10 with a bench seat and I don't much care for buckets. Just wondering if it's worth my drive back home to pick it up or keep the ol' 3-spd grind box. Are there any other synchro 5-speed transmissions that will bolt up to a SBC besides the $2,200 Tremec?
I don't have one handy to measure, but they're about 7" further back than early Ford - not that that means much to you. I would guess that it would fit in your truck & clear the bench, but it's a guess... Here's a couple pics that may/may not help - none of them are mine (all lifted off internet - mostly here!) - 1st is comparison shot of early Ford, S10 T5, Mustang T5 and second pic is S10 T5 mounted to flathead
pull one from a full size chevy, 88-93ish or you'll be doing it again the first time you get frisky with the 1-2 shift. or swap the tailshaft onto a camaro/firebird unit. inliners.org tech tips t5 page
I was just wondering if this could be done.....the tailshaft swap I mean.... Here's the link to the tech section..... http://www.inliners.org/tech/info.html
Yes. This swap will move your shifter up approx. 6 1/2 inches further forward than a Muncie 4 speed stick or 12 inches back from the front of tranny.
Got one in a '64 C-10 with bench seats, matter of fact. You'll have plenty of space at the floor. The only hitch is that the S-10 shifter bends back towards the seat really sharply. You should be fine if you straighten that bend out a little bit.
Hardcore, I just went out to the garage and took a measurement. This is with a Chevy bellhousing, which I'm assuming you'll be using. The distance from the bellhousing (the face which meets the engine block) to the shift lever stalk is 18". Let me know if you need any other dimesions or measurements.
Yes - it can be done. You will have speedo issues. Also, be sure to swap the oiling funnel on the end of the countershaft when you do this - this little orange/brown plastic piece should match the tailhousing, not the countershaft.
