I've found many discussions about the strength and weaknesses of the early ford/1939 3 speed transmission but nothing about the strength of the u joint. Are they a liability or is it a non issue? Are they stronger than the transmission?
    Thanks!

Non issue --- everything else in the flathead Ford drive line will break before the 'U' joint.

What 42Merc said, never broke one, but did grenade a '39 box and Columbia rear end at the same time.

Come to think of it, I have seen sheared axle keys, broken axles and busted transmissions, but never a broken universal joint.

I broke one last year, but had not been greasing it regularly.

It was dry, and a mess.
