Technical I.D. this Booty

This internet photo became the topic of a discussion classified under WTF ! Now since this photo came without any info (other than to say "lightening holes" the discussion concluded this is an R&D mock up of sort's. But what engine is this exactly ?

What get's me is this. Are the heads not 90 degrees of one another ? I know of modern engines like that but this does not look modern.

not a Chevy, for many reasons. Not a pontiac, either, since it's a deep skirt block. Not an international, it's too simple looking. Not many engines have a curved valley pan like that, though. The Olds 215 has a different bellhousing bolt pattern, and besides, it's aluminum. Buicks have a flat surface for the ends of the intake to sit on.

Good mystery.

 

I'm surprised to see another guy who had ih come to mind. Ih would also have dizzy in front and 9ish bolts in the flexplate.

Looks to be a bell housing mounted starter on there too behind that piece of bell, they must have been spinning it for some reason.

Or did the converter grenade, and destroyed the bellhousing because that looks funky, in a bad way?

 

I know nothing about that engine, but Butch is right, that rear end belongs to Charo!

Lot of work to install that freeze plug without the special flex plate bolt socket. Bob

 

I`m not a motor man, but my buddy says you have to tear the motor completely down to replace the rear main seal.
