In the mid 70's when my brother built his 1951 Chev Custom he used a steering wheel from, we think, a 1959 Oldsmobile....here in Oz Oldsmobiles were no longer sold except in very limited numbers so we really weren't sure of the year , however I was wondering if anyone knows when these deep dished Oldsmobiles steering wheels were in use..........I have seen pics of them in various custom cars and stock Oldsmobiles with different years indicated.............I don't have a pic showing the steering wheel however it was a mid grey colour and the 51 Chev column was shortened 9" to accommodate the Olds wheel..........so when did Olds start & finish using these steering wheels.........thanks.........heres a pic of the Chev taken with my Dodge in 1978..........thanks Andy Douglas
I have one that looks like the one I had in a 57 Olds when I was a kid. It may not be as deep as you refer to but seems way deep to me. By the way I took it from a 1949 Correct Craft runabout boat. Looked cool in there.
My '64 98 had a fairly deep wheel on it yet, they got shallower as the years progressed. 59 was the super deep one, but I would consider any 59-64 Olds full-size wheel as "deep"
I think 59 and 60 Olds had them, maybe 61 and 62 also, but they might not be as deep. Not sure but 57/ 58 looks to have had one too, just not as deep. Google it, lots of pictures come up. I have one from a 59 or 60.
Thanks guys, Fat*** that one in the red& white interior looks a lot like what was in the Chev, almost certain that's what it was .......I ended up owning the Chev for about 15yrs till early 2000's but never took a pic of the interior, full custom dash, console, seats and that Olds steering wheel..........the car was sold & since then its been 2dr'd and had a top chop as well as the custom front sheet metal replaced with stock parts(at least that's what ebay listings have shown).....lol...........dunno if the Olds steering wheel still lives there tho'.........lol...............andyd
