I wear them when it gets below 40 deg up here. Has something to do with having frost bite about 15 years ago. -60 can be a bitch.
I was taught at an early age to be cautious and 50 years later I am still cautious. I always wear gloves anytime that I touch and work with anything. Even mowing the lawn. For my auto work, I wear rubber latex gloves. For welding and sheet metal I wear leather gloves. Etc... Being diabetic, I don't want cracked and rough hands that will split at anytime and take way too long to heal or not heal at all.
If I'm doing heavy mechanical stuff like using a ratchet or pull handle on some seriously tight bolts in areas where one slip and you bust your hands, I try to wear leather gloves. Since I've gotten older, just any scrape or bump brings my blood to the top of the skin or worse yet peels off a hunk of skin. I've tried the latex and the so called mechanics gloves for some other things, but I just can't start a nut or bolt with them on, so I seldom use them. I've never been afraid of getting oil and grease on my hands, been doing it over 45 years, but sometimes will slip a pair of the latex on if I'm messing with chemicals. I use leather gloves if I'm doing a lot of welding or metal cutting, just tacking though I usually just bare hand it. I need to look into those sleeves. After a day working on something in tight places where I have to run my arm down to get to something I look like I've been in a fight. Some kind of sleeve would probably be good to have in times like that.
Sometimes; usually only for welding, handling sheetmetal. I'm big on eye and hearing protection as well as dust mask/respirator. Seeing people paint, grind, weld and and saw w/o it is a pet peeve of mine. I'm astounded at how many people I see use a chainsaw without and eye or hearing protection. It's sheer laziness and stupidity. Had a gifted custome auto painter I went to High School with pass away from not always using his respirator. Worked at a shop with a co-worker that lost an eye using a chainsaw without eye protection. Chain broke at speed and that was all she wrote. I can't stand wearing latex gloves when working on a car, like that English guy on that car flipping show. I see that, and immediately think the guy is afraid of getting his hands dirty. I call them "hand condoms" and think they're for pussies. JMHO.
I have to go along with him. From starting out in the 60's I never wore gloves or saw anyone wear gloves in a shop until I went to work in a tire store in the early 70's and a couple of young guys who didn't want their hands to show that they worked with their hands wore gloves all the time changing tires. That may be part of the glove popularity, some folks seem to look down on guys who have hands that look like they do real work now. True I have the scars to show for it but still don't wear gloves unless I am handling something hot or sharp or welding. I have gotten used to wearing gloves in the job I have now as it is part of the job but still can't get used to working on a car wearing gloves.
Ear plugs and safety glasses for everything. I wear ear plugs to mow the yard, after 8 years in a stampong plant, I just dont like loud stuff. Gloves most of the time, not to stay clean, cuts and burns are annoying.
