No. I run my 4200lb Galaxie over 100mph on nearly a weekly basis and have yet to have my Allied Wheel Supremes fly apart. Buy the good ones made by Allied and it shouldn't ever be an issue.
I have never had a problem with the cheap ones I got for $360 a set. it is on a big-*** heavy 59 T-bird that I used to drive everyday. they just rust at the drop of a hat..
My Pacer astros havn't fallen apart! Had em on my Cutl*** for a bit more than a year now. One is starting to rust a bit...
So they rust at the seams? I'm also probably getting them through Discount Tire-what brand makes them now,Allied?
US Wheel makes them now. I just picked up a used set off the cl***ifieds if you want to check them out. They looked really good, stamped made in 2004. They are on my 5,000 pound caddy, hope they hold up! bryan
where can you score the cheap ones. I remember two piece mags coming apart in the 70's. That ****ed. I'd still like to find some more affordable astros. I'd rather buy torque thrusts. Rod
no, Ive run a few sets and they're fine.................... there are acually a couple of companies selling "supremes" ........ Allied wheel, US wheel, and Pacer wheels. theyre all IDENTICAL which leads me to believe that one company makes them and these guys are the distributors. either way the wheels are fine they have to p*** DOT approval and insurance standards to be sold in the US.
Not rusting at the seams, they are rusting on the rim. One the second step...not where the balancing weights go, the one inside that. Never have waxed them, or thought about it even....guess I'll get on it!
Call Ken in Torrance, Ca. GDC Enterprises 310-320-8882. They are about 100 a piece and that includes the cap and lugs. Shipping is on you
I bought a set of Astro's from Ken for my 66 Caprice Wagon. Never had any problems. I've bought other rims from him as well. Awesome guy to deal with and he knows his stuff!!
They are not Identical. I have a pair I have ran for awhile on my 54 3/4 ton GMC with no problems. I got them at the Long Beach swap, I believe from the same Ken mentioned above. He had two different styles of the same size 15 x 7. The ones I got have a plate or gusset across the back of the wide part of the spoke at the rim. It covers about a third of the spoke and is not visable from the front. The other ones did not. Same problem with the chrome as everyone.
only if they have a dot stamp. if its missing, its a good bet they haven't been tested. there are alot of knockoffs out there. its a vast conspiracy by the mice to take over the world.
I'll put another positive vote for Ken. I bought a set for my old 60 El Camino and he provided great service and price. I think he has signed on here as wheeldude or something like that.
I bought a set of 15's from San Fernando Tire. AWC(Allied Wheel Company) makes them. I compared them to a set on my buddy's impala. His wheels had a backing plate welded to it. Mine and his look identical from the front. But I'd rather be cruising around on his wheels than on my Allied's. Sounds like there are different ways of manufacturing them. Ken seems like a safe bet.
As I stated in an earlier post, Mine came from Ken and are holding up a 5,000 lb 60 caddy with no problems
once again i'll tell the short version of the story. Imperial wheels out of new york bought all the original toolings and the rights to astros years ago. ALLIED WHEEL CO makes them for him using the original designs. the us wheel and pacer versions HAVE been known to crack and even a few have broken. it's never been at highway speed i don't know where that came from. it was usually on low-lows and had to do with being a little to switch happy. ALLIED astros are stronger than any others. the gussets in the back of the spoke are stronger. they are altogether a better wheel and worth the extra money. if your wanting to be cheap drive a hyundia or however the hell you spell it and be done with it. i have been running the ALLIED supremes on my '64 for somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 years i believe and never a problem. even here in the humid ***ed south a good cleaning every coupla weks or so and they look as good as the day i got them. the set i put on my old impala is still on it something like 14 years later and still look good. Jeepers getting astros from ALLIED should be EASY for you. they are in texas just like you. i believe discount does sell allieds but i can't say for sure. allieds website does have a dealer locator service to answer that question for you. now to finish the lesson original astros were also known as "weak" wheels. i've also had several sets of originals and not had a busted one. most were on lifted cars that saw abuse. use this as you will. and all of this has been covered here many times. i given the knowledge that i've am***ed over the last 18 or so years of building 60s style customs openly only to be called an *** by the new crew of 60s style gurus. sorry if i sound pissy. i'm an angry angry man would beats his head against a wall in frustration daily. anyhow there is the short version. thanks the ***hole is now slipping back into his cage...ken....
