Just picked up this bone stock 54 hardtop. Now the fun begins. First off I'll start by lowering it. Then perhaps some dual carbs and other goodies. Just want a nice mild custom. What do you guys think? [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

WOW. I love mild customs.....but when a stocker is that nice. I would have to enjoy it that way for a couple years a least. Gary

Congratulations on a super find. The car is in all around amazing shape for its age. My first car was a yellow & white 53 Belair hardtop when I was 17. They were rare in my part of the world probably because the salt killed everything on wheels and that was the eventual fate for mine as well. It is hard to beat a nice looking 53/54 Chev hard top.

Hi. WOW, that body & interior look too great to touch. But do what you must as it will look great either way. My avatar here shows my 46 coupe with a 1957 blue flame 235 engine that has been pepped up some. Has dual 2 barrel Webber carbs, headers, hot cam, bored to 0.060 and a HEI ignition. Added electric wipers and a vintage air unit that will chill me out in this Texas heat.. Changed ring & pinion from 411 to a 355 and it just purrs down the road at 65 now.
start a build thread when you begin the changes.

This car looks great the way it is. Reminds me of the 1954 my dad bought new and we took a trip to Miami Fl. It took us 3 long days to get there. Bill

My folks had a 54 4 door sedan that my older brother totaled. Kenmo I thought the Biscayne didn't start until 58.

I am with 2ndChance and Uncleandy; it is a beautiful car. Please keep it original; there are not too many that look that nice. Especially where we live. Man that is SWEET!

Great looking car! first car I ever had on the road was a one owner '54 4door, had a lot of good miles on that car back in high school days. Never was a visor fan on '50's cars if that matters. Bob

Thanks 37Kid, yea my dad had 4-door '53 - his first new car - my job was winding the clock so now I wind the one on my 54 - the visor works on the 53-4's but gotta be the right car - some look out of place.

Yours is a standard, find the rear end out of a '54 automatic. It will be a 3.55, better for cruisin' than the 4.11's in there now.
I have a '54 hardtop, not as nice as yours, that I hot-rodded back in the '60's.
    Kenmo...no Biscuits in '53/54.

I agree with all of you. I'm not going to hack it up. Just keep it simple and clean. That goes with lowering it too. I Don't want to tunnel it or put in a big notch

Always remember - less is more.
You can sell the many garbage options to a restorer for enough $$ to get some pipes & lower it.
The rear axle is a 3.70, so it's fine ....

Not a big fan of visors either. Your plan is sound IMHO. Beautiful car.

That is a beautiful car. Always liked the 54. Drove a 2 dr. Sedan for about 15 years. Wish I still had it. I would run the skirts awhile, then go skirtless. Really changed the look. Enjoy!

One of the prettiest Chevys made! It's your car do what you want to it, but Chevy did an awesome job designing the 54 hard to improve on it.

off the hook beauty, my 2 cents, no visor, no front bumper guards, lower the car mildly, fenton header with dual Smithy's, dual carbs would be nice but can be problematic, more grill teeth, done deal Lucille. Congrats on a sweet ride. Another nice addition if it's possible is the Pontiac trim on the rear window like the blue 54 in the thread, don't know how tough that is to do.

I would lose the visor as i think it breaks up the flow of the lines,54's look great with just being lowered and left with stock body work [ with 55' headlight brows and Pontiac belt line trim being the exception]. A level to slight negative rake looks best i.m.o.. Cool car, great find.
