Hey Guys I'm tearing into the '42-47 pick-up open banjo rear in my roadster (had it on the road for a few miles last year and found the rearend was a bit howly). The inside axle bearing races are discolored (darkened-blued) and the forward thrust side of the ring gear has definite wear, along with some small chips on the pinion gear. I suspect that it was not ***embled correctly. My first response was to order new gears, bearing gaskets etc. and have at it. That said, Mac at Van Pelt Sales(who btw has been very helpful by phone, email and through his website! and from whom I will be purchasing the needed parts) advised that nobody makes a ring and pinion for the 42-47 light truck open banjo rearend. So my question to those with experience...given the pictures of my ring and pinion below, can I debur them, set them up with appropriate bearing preloads, and expect reasonable results? I ***ume that it will likely be a bit noisy (or very noisy, or not noisy?). I just don't want it to self destruct on the highway. What do you experts think? Or am I destined to try and find a better original set out there (3.78:1 btw...in case anyone has a NOS or good used set taking up much needed space and gathering dust under their bench lol). Thanks in advance for any inputs.
That's what I feared...I've seen elsewhere that a p***enger car ring gear will work with a 42-47 truck ring gear (***uming same gear ratios)...any thoughts on that? Based on the photos of my pinion gear...is it usable with a p***enger car ring?
If you can't find another set I would get a good used 3.78 car ring then lightly stone the pinion down so long as it's not through the hardening it should be ok, set up the correct backlash and run some good synthetic gear oil, redline shockproof works great. I have done this many times with no problems.
I recently bought 3 complete open drive rearends. I dis***embled one and it is a 3.77 ratio but haven't looked at the other 2. I will check my inventory and see what ratio is on one set of matched gears I have
That type of wear in those rears is,IME caused by a LOT of end play in the pinion gear bearing and not much lube.
Thanks for the response. I'm not sure yet...I'm talking with a local guy that has a rear axle still under a field truck. He's going to jack it up and spin it tomorrow to try and determine the gear ratio. I'll send you a PM.
Just to wrap this thread up...found a good rear axle with a good ring and pinion of the correct ratio in a field truck. Thanks all for your input and offers.
