hello everyone , i'v been putting a 455 buick in my modal a ford , and I run into a snag ,the passenger side manifold sticks out so far to the side at the rear of the engine , so here 's my question did buick ever make any other type manifold , I don't want to build headers if I don't have to , I need ideas
I don't know for certain but I assume it was turned out to allow for the automatic transmission dipstick and air conditioner box. Maybe somebody else knows. Could it be cut and welded to turn it down?
Found this chart which shows that there was only one part number for the right side manifold. http://www.buicks.net/shop/reference/bigblock_casting_numbers.html
The above chart shows a 68 400/430 being different. This is a 68 430 out of an Electra in my build. Best pic I have of it right now. Don't know if you can see enough to tell if it is different. I can get a better pic of it tonight if that would help. Let me know what angle you need to see it from. I guess I also have a 455 at home too, I could see if I can tell if there is a big difference.
First pic is 455. Heater box makes it hard to see much. Other 2 are the 430. I couldn't tell much difference from the view I have. Hope this helps.
Try a driver side manifold on the pass. side so it exits forward. I don't blame you, I would not want to build headers. Better performance , cooler looking, what a hassle.
If you can zoom in on this pic I suspect the drivers side would exit right into the motor mount. Do you have room to offset the engine to the driver side?
oh ,thankyou so much , I think it helped ,my manifold has part no 1383648 and that makes it a 68 -430 manifold ,but for some reason mine sticks out way more than yours ,I wonder what manifold you have
Mine came out of a very low mileage 68 Electra so it should be the original manifold. Maybe it's camera angles making them look different.
right side manifolds 455 430 - 1238094 1238054 1383648 cheaper to make up a set of headers, start with a used set of headers for the flanges, get shorty SBC headers and combine them.
You do know you can cut and reweld cast iron exhaust manifolds ? I couldn't find a right side manifold for an original Boss 302 Mustang and the 351 Cleveland manifold I had hit the bellhousing . So cut a notch in it and welded it back up. Looked factory until you took it off and turned it over . Used my stick welder and nickel rod.
