Been kinda quiet in here. I'm sure we all know "Blue One" is getting ready to paint and I'm saving for wheels. I'm half way there.:) So, what are the rest of you up to?

Well...I built my new windshield frame and posts from some scrap steel, rusty pipe and repurposed tierod tubes.
Don't have the glass in it yet though.
When its finish assembled the top retainers will have wing nuts and the bottom ones will be acorn nuts. The jury is still out on support rods.
Hoping to be out again next weekend.

Can you take some more pictures of your posts? I'm literally standing here scratching my head looking at mine. I have hacked them up too many times to get them all smoothed out, so I am looking at splicing in some sliced DOM tubing and some radiused plate steel. Not looking promising so far.

  5. Im repainting the rear end of my 26, one more coat today and also paint the rear radius rods. I have replace the cast Super Bell front axle with a new So Cal forged item and this will get painted today too as its a nice sunny day (winter here). The chassis should be back to a roller in two weeks. JW

    Sure!
I wanted tall posts so I split the old water pipe and made a full frame to span the cowl. Made it easier to align everything.
Then I made up the outer sections that actually bolt to the cowl and welded them on.
After that I made the triangular front and rear filler pieces and welded those on.
At the very bottom of the post I added some metal and welding to shape the bump around the base of the posts. i just made them look like the old chrome posts I removed.
It was pretty easy with a grinder and then a 1/2 round file for finish.

Once everything was fully welded I cut out the center part of the pipe that went across the top of the cowl. I could have left it in place but didn't want the thicker look it gave.
I added some hole saw plugs, left over from some other past job, for the round upper mount flats.

The purpose of all this was to get a more vertical windshield, 2" taller and a little bit farther ahead.
In addition to allowing for a future roof, this will also visually shorten my long cowl a little AND give us a bit more wind protection. The two hinge plates welded to the sides are for wind wings.
    It all adds up....

Speaking of windshield posts and frames, I just boxed up mine and shipped them off yesterday to Ogden Chrome for the show chrome treatment
The final pieces I'm having plated I promise. :)

  9. Not much here, the bucket broke down in a very touristy (and cop heavy!) area of the beach. The one wire alternator bit the dust. I'm going to rebuild it, but I think I'm going to convert it back to 3 wire operation. On the plus side, while I was parked in front of O'Reilly's, a car came blasting up the street (thankfully missing the bucket), side swiped two or three cars parked right in front of me, the crashed into a pole at the next intersection! Turned out he was already running from the cops (dui, I assume), because by the time I got past the "did that really just happen" reaction, two cop cars, two cops in a razor, and two bike cops all rolled up. I bought a battery at O'Reilly's (the kid behind the counter swore that was the problem, and even though I knew it wasn't, that battery was seven years old, had spent virtually all of those last seven years sitting around, and buying a new one got me back to the campground I was staying at) and as I was rolling out, one of the cops arresting the guy said "Bad Ass Ride" as I passed by! Kinda made my day! I usually don't worry about the cops (I have some close friends and family members that are cops) but the bucket definitely doesn't meet the 1500# maximum for being fender less here (and I'm sure as hell not putting fenders over 22.5 inch wide tires!), and I'm not running baffles in the side pipes, so if I ever run across someone who wants to make an example of me, it's going to be an expensive day!

My son and I took the roadster to the Rat Fink Reunion in Manti, Ut. It's a 300 mile round trip. I didn't get the top done, so we were glad it wasn't as hot as last year. And, roadster didn't break down on the road this time.

    Bad decisions make good stories.

No, I took a few of some cars at the park I liked but none of the road trip.

Well, the size rear wheels I was going to use for my build have been discontinued by Cragar. BUT... Summit Racing has 8 available in a couple of their branches. So, I'm moving ahead of my schedule and ordering them today. The size is 15 X 8, with a 3.750 inch back space. They should be here the middle of next week.

I'm just glad I checked availability this morning.

Hacker: how did you split the pipe? I had to have a friend do mine on a mill after cutting ??

You should probably "quote" him, so he'll get an alert to your question.

No access to a mill so I had to go old school.
I bought some angle iron of a suitable size, clamped the tube into it and sliced the tube with a zip wheel, using the edge of the angle iron as a guide. The angle had to be repositioned then to make a second cut so the slot would be wide enough.
Worked surprisingly well...just had to clean up the sharp edge with a small 36 grit disc.

I did something similar, only even more barbaric... I looked down the DOM tubing like I was sighting in a rifle. You can see lines lengthwise down the tube where they were "Drawn Over Mandrel". I used a line on top for my first cut, then eye-crometer'd the line directly below it. I clamped the tube in my vise and used a cut-off wheel in my grinder. To clean up the tubing halves, I just touched them up on my disc sander. They are almost perfectly symmetrical surprisingly.

I'm not far enough along to show much more progress, but this is where I'm going....a very long, slow, winding road...

It's surprising what can be done with so little...IF you just stand back and think about it for a bit.
    Takes a certain mindset though.
Many just can't get past less than perfect parts but machined perfection seem almost sterile to me.
I love a bit of that...hand hewn character myself! LoL :D

    Looking great Tim!

The beauty of building a "T", be it a bucket, modified or a lakes modified.....an inexpensive body, a bunch of miscellaneous metal and a bunch of creativity like above. A good way to teach yourself how to do stuff, instead of just dreaming.

Today brings the last trip to drop things off at the blasting shop, the bed and tailgate, the front axle and grille shell.
Also dropping the gas tank off to the powder coating shop, I decided that it will be Wimbledon white just like the wheels and the firewall.
It should look nice in contrast sitting in the bed and the white color should keep the tank cooler in the sun as well.

I had AC installed in my house this year Fred, we hadn't had it for 13 years. I expect we will get to use it for a few weeks later on in the summer.
We did get to use it for a couple of days in May. :D

Well, I'll be....... my wheels arrived today! Opened the boxes, drooled and repacked them, as I save up for tires. It was a welcome surprise that they came a few days early. My motivation is renewed.:)
