First off i know this is not "traditional" in the strictest sense. with that said..
I bought the car done this way a couple of years ago. My intention was a traditional car that I could drive any where. I just drove 8 hrs to TROG and back. Mission accomplished.

However. What you see here is a 1959 Chevy 283. Last time I looked 1959 was pretty traditional. An early 60's build could have that. Every thing on this car is 1959 or older or Repro EXCEPT the transmission and alternator.

So the Engine or.. the Valve covers...

I always HATED when someone threw on some stupid fake valve covers on a SBC but I really thought this guy did an awesome job with these '52 Lincoln Mark II's.

When I am at a show or cruise everybody is puzzled by the motor and asks what it is. Cool but I am not sure if I am being blinded by it being my car or not. Are you all walking away saying.. that looks stupid.

I know My car My way. But like I said, Am I just being blinded by it being on my car?

PS . Yes, some day I would love it to be a Flattie sitting there.

  2. Those that ask might not know the difference if it had corvette covers on. I like your car. Go drive it and forget the covers. On here we know it's a sbc with some odd ball covers.

Beautiful, very well built and detailed car but personally I don't care for the two Rochesters adapted to a four barrel intake or the Lincoln valve covers. Neither one was ever seen BITD; with that said there is nothing traditional about the appearance of the engine. I'd rather see an AFB and stock valve covers. JMO

  5. If it were my car, I'd do three things: Lose the fake patina, paint the carb adaptor black to match the intake, and get a black alternator and mount it lower. Otherwise, it's fine....

  6. It's always been "traditional" to graft on tail lights, grills, hub caps, you name it, from other makes and models. There's nothing about a SBC that make it a sacrilege to mix-n-match valve covers. If people stop to give it a second look or snap a pix, I call it a win. If a grumpy troll happens to cross your path some day and wants to go thumbs down, he can smurf himself. Don't let anyone steal your joy!

Tough call that. This is like a car with E&J headlights. A clinical description is the valvecovers don't work because of the tight radius' against the body feature radius'. If you watch people attracted to the car you'd see they study the valve covers and then look at the car. They pick up on the feature that is out of place like a cue stick in a golf bag.
Some cars can carry it, yours is close, maybe an odd item to blend it like painting the adapter as another said. Sweet ride for sure.

I'm curious how he adapted them to a standard SBC head?

Funny, I have no problem with the Lincoln covers, but just hate it when guys install the Olds covers. Unless you're really into Lincolns, the cover could be just some extra fancy after market pieces. With the Olds covers, it's pretty obvious they are trying to portray it as something it isn't.

I don't go to shows because of all the people that say "Well I would have done it this or that way" , so I won't go there on the few changes I would do.
But....I always wondered how well those adapters 4 bbl to two 2 bbls run?
I had thought about running one on an o/t 229 cu in V-6 engine in a fenderless roadster (I already have the engine , 4 bbl manifold, valve covers etc)

One of my first observations when viewing someone's ride is stance. You have it in spades. Very nice car, most of us would love to have it in our garage.

first time I saw one of those two carb adapters was in a Hot Rodders glass display case, I thought then as I thought now,,, why the hell would someone want to do that?:) this was long before they started remaking them and people actually started using them again.

as for the valve covers, I would put some Corvette covers on that one, or find some early rare M/T's with all fins and small M/T with no oil fill or breather holes.

very cool car,,, chop, wheels , stance are all good.:)

I would loose that gold thing on the alternator and never put a flathead in it. Do what makes you happy. That's why you bought the car, right?

  19. I like your car a bunch. While the Lincoln valve covers might not be my first choice, I could easily live with 'em if for no other reason than to watch the people scratch their heads. Pretty straight-forward to change 'em out for a different look if you tire of them. I say drive the heck out of it and let the nay sayers say their nays.:D

I think I saw a couple cars built by Jason Graham that had vertical ribbed valve covers similar to those, but without the Lincoln emblem. If it bothers you maybe get a set of those but personally I don't see an issue with those . I think you've got a pretty nice hot rod there.

The engine appearance is all over the map....I'd probably shake my head if I saw it in person. The valve covers are neat, they would look nice on a Ford motor. The alternator would look good under the hood of whatever modern car it came from. The two little carbs on a 4bbl intake...huh?

So yeah, maybe there is something about it that looks odd :)

But if you like it, don't worry about what I think.

I like the valve covers but the dual carb on the adapter thing is a bit iffy to me. Still from that 20 ft back side shot they look cool as all hell and those who aren't in the know probably won't notice the adapter anyhow.
The generator sticks out but it has the early style case that could have come on a 62 Chevy rather than the finned later case meaning if a guy had built the car in 62 or 63 or there about it could have very well been used as that was the hot lick then.

I'm not seeing the "fake patina" that someone mentioned, I do see what appears to be the lines where it was chopped and not finished off and painted to match but I'll attribute that to the concept that you got it chopped and welded back and getting it going for the road trip was more important than finishing that part of the body work and the body work and paint work will be soon finished or finished after the end of the rod trot season.
I just flat like the car and hope to see it all finished up with nice paint the same color next year after you drive it for the rest of the season and then finish it off over the winter.

If it pleases you, then leave it just like it is.

If it was mine, I would lose the two-carb adapter (use an real 4 barrel or replace the manifold with a 3x2 manifold), build a low-mount on the driver's side for the alt so it is not so in-your-face, find some old SBC valve covers.

Like the rest, I say if it please you is awesome. If you really don't like the valve covers, I'll buy them from you and run them myself. I have thick skin and good taste.

  29. To me the whole engine has a tacky add on look to it, if you want multiple carbs then put a damn multi carb intake and carbs on it, not that Chinese cheese.
The goofy belt guard on an alternator sticking right on top like that is another hey I'm really trying to hard to look like something idea.
Now the valve covers ain't fooling anyone but the uneducated as well, but if that's the crowd you're trying to impress your doing a hell of a job on the whole package.
With that being said it's your car, not mine, so if it floats your boat then row on up the down flowing creek.

  30. My take on the fake valve covers in general is, if you want your engine to look like an Olds Rocket, then build one for it. Same goes for a SBF with Y-block covers, or Lincoln , in this case.
To me, it looks like someone trying to pass off a SBC crate motor as something it's not. In other words, taking the easy way out.
Now, on this car, if I had a SBC, I'd make it look like a 65 327/365. Alternator and all.
There you go, in under the wire on the HAMB.
    Again, strictly MY opinions.
