Home Depot to sell auto parts in FLA

My guess is it will be a lot of motor oil and car wash type stuff. But you never know...


Home Depot will sell auto supplies at 10 Fla. sites

ATLANTA -- Home Depot Inc., the largest home-improvement retailer, is testing sales of auto supplies in 10 stores in the Jacksonville, Fla., area, according to an analyst.
Home Depot is dedicating about 500 square feet to the products, which include motor oil and fuel additives, said Thomas Weisel Partners LLC analyst Matt Nemer. The Atlanta-based retailer is selling the auto supplies for as much as 22 percent lower than auto-parts retailers, including AutoZone Inc., Pep Boys - Manny Moe & Jack, and Advance Auto Parts Inc., Nemer wrote.
Home Depot occasionally experiments with new products and services at its more than 2,000 stores. The company plans to add four convenience stores in Tennessee in the first half of 2006 and may expand that to 300 by 2010.
Nemer said he didn't expect an immediate impact on auto parts retailers. If Home Depot expands the program nationally, or if No. 2 home-improvement retailer Lowe's Cos. were to add similar products, parts retailers' sales or profit could suffer.
Shares of Home Depot fell 37 cents Tuesday to $41.43.
"We are somewhat concerned for auto-parts retailers given that Home Depot already targets the appropriate customer base, the male do-it-yourselfer," San Francisco-based Nemer wrote.

 

oh great... people that don't know anything about hardware selling car parts that they know even less about.

I'll bet the knowlege of the Home Depot help will be on par with most chain auto part store people.

We had a chain here that bought out Builder's Square, a local chain of home improvement places. They stocked oil filters, oil, wax, carb cleaner, and basic stuff that did not require a sales staff. They folded shortly after buying and renovating all of the stores.

I guess a visit will go something like it does when I need hardware...

I wander ten aisles away from the one that I need help at before I find a human in an orange apron. He's up on a 70 foot ladder doing who-knows-what.

Me- "Excuse me."

Me- "Excuse me."

Pud- "Just a minute"

Me- waiting...

Me- "Excuse me."

Pud- "Yes." from the ladder where he's not really doing anything.

Me- "I need some help with the mailboxes."

Pud- "Oh, I work in lighting." But he's on the ladder in lumber.

Me- "There's nobody over there. I just have question about one of them."

Pud- "OK." He huffs.

Me- "Thanks."

We walk to the mailboxes.

Me- "Does this one come with mounting hardware? If so, can I get one from the shelf up there?"

Pud- Picks up and starts reading the box that I already read.

Me- "I already read the box. It doesn't say whether it does or not."

Pud- Keeps reading anyway. "It doesn't say."

Me- I stare with blank frustration. "Yeah, I know that. I'll just get one anyway. Can you get one down for me?"

Pud- "I'll be back with a ladder."

Me- I wait about 15 minutes until the next pud comes down the aisle with 3 customers following him like sheep. As he passes..."Can I get..."

Pud 2- "I'll come back to help you."

Of course he doesn't and I scale the 15 foot shelves for my mailbox.


Company policy must be that after they are asked a question, they are to say "just a minute", leave the customer and that aisle, and immediately and go home.

 

ahaha yes there is never anyone at home depot that can help. Even if you do get their attention they don't know anything. I hope they don't have a parts counter.

Kirk, grab a Mexican at the Home Depot. Generally speaking they are actual construction/remodeling/landscaping types that actually know what they are doing versus a cashier in a silly apron with "flash" buttons all over them (ala Office Space). I'm not surprised you can't find someone in CA who knows dogshit from vanilla ice cream though, who really does anything for themselves out there anyway?

 

My latest experience with HD, they wanted $55 to deliver a stove to the store for me to pick up! I left

 

Man can my brother tell you some stories he works at Home Depot and says yes they are 90% dumb asses, but on the oyher side of the coin can you imagine the type of people they deal with, so he moved into the tool rental dept. and the stories even get better.

 

If I can save a few bucks on oil and filters and other small stuff it would be ok. At least I wan't have to deal with some young girl at a computer wanting to know what type and year of car as well as engine size. They just bive me a dumb look when I say 1950 chevy with 350 v8

 

Who cares?

 

Home Depot and Lowe's should have to register as Agents of the Chinese Government since most of what they have is made by The People's Republic of China.

Home Depot and Wal-Mart may as well stop all the pussy-footin' around and just MERGE already. They could call it Wal-Depot. "You could get the stuff to build a wall, and everything that surrounds it!" (including auto parts) That might be their new saying... TM.

Then the US Gov't would step in and say, "now, now, you're getting too big for your britches, and we aren't getting a big enough piece of the action!", and break them up into the so called "Baby Wal's" (like they did with the "Baby Bells" because of the phone company), then when the fire dies down, after 15 years or so, the original WAL-MART will be allowed to form one GIANT company again, (because they proved there was viable competition in the market place) and begin to take over, calling their "new" company Wally-World, and the US Gov't won't care anymore because too much of their money and efforts are being "diverted" to a never ending war. (Can you tell I work for a phone company? ) Wally-World (CLARK!) will take over the earth and make people poor. It will be an evil empire.

In my vision: It would be one giant store, in each state, the Mecca of sorts, for which we will all come to pay homage once a weekend for the "low, low prices"...under one roof; it would encompass about 20 acres in total, no need to walk in "outdoor discomfort", and would suck the life out of every local business for at least 20 square miles...I kinda picture the movie "Independance Day" where the giant alien spaceships take up their positions around the globe to try to take over the earth. Kinda like Wal-Mart is trying to do now. Then we could have another giant company sucking the life and jobs out of America and farming their "low prices" out to sweatshops overseas. I just hope the hotdogs and slurpees are good.

I'd rather give up more of my hard earned-cash to know it was staying here. If that is even possible.

Okay, I'm done. I will never suport buying car-parts/oils from Home Depot. And I strongly recommend you not buy anything from Wally World either...support your local hardware store.

No shit. My only choices here on the weekends are Advance or Auto Zone. I stopped going into AutoZone about the 2nd or 3rd time that they said my '54 "wasn't in their computer" or, even better, they don't even bother looking and say it isn't in the computer. Ah, well. That topic has been beaten to death on here.

Advance, for the most part, is pretty good. I also buy stuff from them online sometimes to save on sales tax and have it delivered to my house usually within 2 days with no shipping charge. You can even return stuff or turn cores in to the retail store for stuff you buy online.

They're already doing it in Jersey. Our local HD has started carying Black Magic tire protectant , car wash and some waxes.

It smells and looks like Home Depot, but Lowes still carries real hardware stuff. You can still get nuts and bolts, sandpaper, and rough duty bulbs, etc, etc.

I've found that the staff is much more knowledgable. I was in the plumbing department recently, and the kid helping me told me he is an apprentice plumber, and if I need help, his boss could be hired. Turns out he knew his shit, and seemed to be getting referral fees from his boss. I thought that was cool. Same thing in tools a different time, the guy there gave me sound advice about setting up my air compressor.

From what I've been told, The Lowes family are still majority stock holders of the company. I was at their headquarters/original store in NC awhile back. Interesting history there.

 

after 9 pm lowes is about my only choice to get hardware and misc supplies like tranny fluid and oil where I live. Most of the ma and pops are corprate here anyway (bumper-to-bumper, napa ect) and they close by 7pm. I have always thought it was strange that lowes and homedepot sell lawnmowers ect and dont carry motor oil.

 

Customer service is not a part fo doing business anymore, it's an inconveince that employees don't put up with.
We have a new Home Depot that just opened within one mile of a Lowes (that has been open for over five years). I've been in the Home Depot 5 times for needed items and have left for Lowes in anger 4 of the 5 times. I do make certain I let the Service Desk know where I'm going to get my supplies and why (be sure to state it loud enough that the bozo in the office cube and all near customer can hear).
A few weeks ago I went after some steel cable. I waited for someone to cut the cable, but all the employees (I think they call themselves Associates) were to busy having conversations with other orange aprons. I waited while the women at the checkout counters stood at the aisle waiting for someone to check out and the whole time just staring at me. After 15 minutes I went to the (no)service desk and told them, being sure the manager sitting in his little cube could hear, that I had been waitiing for someone to cut the cable for me (would have done it myself but the cutter is locked shut). I was tired of waiting and now was on my way to Lowes to get my cable. The little zit face behind the counter said "I'll get someone back there right away" "Don't bother on my account" I said in a loud voice while walking out the door. Before I made it to the parking lot, from behind me I heard "Sir how much cable did you need?" I turned to see the manage approaching me. I told him I was on my way to Lowes to get 60 feet of 1/4 cable and for him to have a good day. Actually it was only 59 feet.
At Lowes I told this kid I needed 2 peices of cable 20 feet long and 2 peices 9.5 feet long. The kid said they only sold the cable by the foot and couldn't cut it at 9.5 foot. (Rocket science) I said OK, give me a peice 19 foot long and the cut it in half. I don't think he realized this was the same thing.

 

if some of you guys have to ask questions about motor oil and fuel additives,who is really the dumb ass?
i say fuck it,if its cheaper there i will buy it,fuck Wal-Mart!
