Does any one know what ever happened to the otherwise stock nosed, decked and chopped 51 Merc with the slanted posts in the movie Badlands with Martin Sheen???
I just found out that the car was built by a guy named Gary Littlejohn and was in Steet Rodder mag in the 70s painted candy brown with gold scallops. Supposedly it was on ebay this past year back in prime with some shemp billet wheels...Anyone see it?
i thought gary played the sherrif in the movie also. he was mainly a holllwood stuntman, and also a killer motorcycle maker, alot of custom coffin tanks, and built some honda trikes also, was the main builder in the early 70's for sidehack BMX bikes, crazy *** sport,
no ****....never knew the name. He must have a deep rooted love for customs cause thr rear of that roof was pretty right

Most famous for his production of Littlejohn sidehacks (a sidecar-mounted BMX bike). Manufactured BMX bikes from 1973 until 1985. As a manufacturer of motorcycle frames and gas tanks, part-time Hollywood stuntman Gary Littlejohn and his partner, Peter Murphy, were requested to build a BMX frame in 1973 By 1975, Gary Littlejohn had a full line of BMX bikes, ranging from mono-shocks to rigids, from forks to sidehacks Sponsored such early BMX heroes such as Billy Wouda and Bill McIntyre. In 1976, much to the heckling of the industry, Gary made and advertised a 26 inch "Ballooner" (later to be dubbed a "Cruiser")--three years before BMXers would ever consider racing "beach cruisers." Introduced "Pit Bikes" to his odd line of bikes in 1979 Followed up his original "Balloon-tire" cruiser with the times, manufacturing a 26 inch and 24 inch cruiser frame, before dropping out of the compe***ive BMX market. Today, Gary lives in Vermont and is a stunt coordinator in the film industry. i remeber the BMX stuff. worked with a few guys, i can remeber the names but they were customizers, built cars for the movies, closeup cars and then the ones they neede to haul ***, it would be cool if he came to the HAMB, he has worked with tons of real crazy actors and the stories would be cool, plus building all the custom stuff, remeber when they crashed the bike in the movie ,ANGELS AS HARD AS THEY FALL< gary buseys and scott glenn's first movie, anyhow he flew that cycle over the rocks and crashed and burned big time stunt
The Badlands Merc was for sale just a few years back - and it was on ebay. I actually exchanged a few emails with the (then) current owner, who was the son of the previous owner. He was selling the Merc to pay for some medical costs he had incurred (the son, not the father). He mentioned the Gary Littlejohn and Badlands's movie connection. I don't think the Merc got much action, which is why I contacted the seller in the first place. When I learned of the reason he was selling, it just didn't seem right to try and drive a bargain that might have put it in my budget. -murph
i just watched the movie. anyone know the history of the car? did gary build it ,or was it and old custom? the credits said "cars by gary littlejohn".
On one of the Merc threads, the dude who currently owns the Merc is a member here on the HAMB. I dont have time to look but maybe someone does?
a comment posted on the Internet movie Car Database in 2009 " This is a cool car , I happen to own it know bought it from the grandson i was told of the original owner , I got all sorts of papers with it, concerning its use in several movies over the years, "
Here is another one for you Merc guys to search for.Do any of you remember the short lived TV series"Private Eye"?.He drove a black 50 Merc cpe.
i remember that TV show ...20 years or so ago. Brought back memories of 77 Sunset Strip when I'd watch the whole 50s bades detective show waiting for the Kookie car (or in this case the merc) to make an appearance. The Private Eye drove a Caddy conv & his sidekick kid drove the Merc
Gene Winfield built two identical Mercs for the short-lived TV show "Private Eye" which featured a young Josh Brolin. One of the cars is currently owned by "Cowboy" in northern Illinois. After Cowboy bought the car, he took it to Winfield who then chopped the top and recorded the job on video as an instructional demonstration. Gene still has it available on DVD. I don't recall what happened to the second car.

Interesting that these fresh comments are verbatim what rbantique quoted as being posted on imcdb in 2009...i don't think I'll be emailing anybody for pics. Or nobody.
I know exactly where this car is. The man that owns this car already replied above.and yes he goes by the name nobody
Looks like Pat Ganahl wrote an article about this car... and even mentions this thread. MYSTERY MERC Seems like he'd love some back story on it, if the owner is interested in sharing.
