  1. Customs Street Auckland New Zealand late 1950s. The Vauxhall E series - built 1952 thru '57, one of which is at lower right, was one of the best selling sedans in NZ in its day. Most street scenes from the '50s thru the '60s will usually have an example in there somewhere. The Ford utility on the left was an Australian built model, known as the Mainline. The sedan versions was the Customline. Akl 50s Customs St.jpg

Steffen, this picture you posted cracks me up. I see the GM logo at the bottom right corner but that is my great uncle Charlie Pollard on the ground. I am not familiar with the man in the stake truck. That picture is probably close to 60 years old. I worked there in the 60s for a while and later on as well. My cousins still run the business in the same location. That truck was still there when I worked there but had been retired. Charlie was into vintage cars and fire engines and you can see one of his fire engines in the background. His brother Barney (my grandfather) was the large collector who owned hundreds of old cars.

Seeing that old derrick brings back memories. We did some crazy things with it that were dangerous as hell IMO. Charlie was a tough old guy. One day while working with the derrick and moving dump bodies I cut my head open. I had blood running down my face and Charlie took a rag and stuck his hat on top of the rag on my head so we could get back to work. 19477371_1158466257632258_7423247722833084481_o.jpg My cousin Terry came out and yelled at his dad and sent me to get a couple of stitches. Crazy times.

Crazy story Jim. It's an official GM Photo. Perhaps you can ask your great uncle Charlie Pollard how it was made? Would be interessting.

Honest John. The sign should have read "49 New Caddy's and 1 Lincoln". Well, he probably wasn't honest and his name was probably not John...

This is not a used car lot, it's an auto farm, and as the sign says, Pat has a good crop. How many remember when traffic signals did not have an amber light?

    lot3.jpg
Authorized by whom? Have you noticed that there are no more used cars these days, only pre-owned cars?

And the photo below, "Guaranteed Used Cars". What this meant was that it was guaranteed that the cars were used...

Growing up in Los Angeles, one of the things I remember is that grown-ups always wore hats. And the only people that wore baseball caps were guys on baseball teams...
