  5. Um actually no, every reference I can find, including Alexander himself and the NHRA Museum calls it Shudder Bug.I know the shutter bug name seems logical, but I don't believe you are correct this time.

This is Paul Shapiro driving the Israeli Rocket top gas dragster of Cohen, Shapiro, Sonnenblik, and O'Brien at Master Field (Miami), FL in 1963. Blown Olds in the first picture (no headers), blown Dodge wedge with Orner injector in the second. A regular winner in Division II running mid-8's, no handling issues. Currently in the Garlits museum. Regards, Chase

  10. Turk/Cox/Braswell at Mel Larsons west of Phoenix 1963. this car is now in my collection. I think she is a real looker and it ran good too. I still have to build the headers.

  11. My understanding from studying about this car is was built by Fuller in 1958 and was the first digger with the narrow rear and hooped cockpit. Started out like this with unpainted alum short body. Later had full body and painted black, than painted red. Always ran a Poncho. Ran gas and fuel, driven my Ivo and later Bill Alexander. Was destroyed at San Fernando in 63. Recreated around 2002. This Pontiac powered Fueler was one of the few that put Greer/Black/Prudhomme on the trailer at Lions.
It appears that Fullers work and style apparantly evolved and this design led to the Greer/Black/Prudhoome fueler.

  12. It was my understanding that the GBP car began as a Stuckey chassis. Fuller reworked it when Greer bought. Maybe I'm wrong on that too.

Addressing the post below this one:

I guess you're right. The photo is only 23 years old and I don't know when the car was built
but it's got the wing, blower straps and what may be anodized Centerlines. So, waaay out
of place. Look at it this way, it got you to react / respond to one of my photos. By the way,
is the Stude I posted a short time before this offensive? Ah, hell, I'll pull it
    just to be safe. Mitch.

I seem to recall the War Wagon in the late 60's at Oswego track?

I always loved all the Cool Names on the drag racing cars back in the day.
Everyone would refer to the cars by their name and sometimes I never knew who drove the car.

Dean, in 1964 Rod Stuckey told me that same fact. He was badly burned in the car, which led to mandatory fire suits. I knew him as we were both from Kansas City. I'd like to believe Rod (he's been gone for 40+ years), but Fuller recently makes a pretty convincing case that Rod's claim is just not true. Bruce Meyer, who now owns the car, stated in the Hot Rod Magazine overage of his restoration of the GBP car several years ago, that it was indeed a Rod Stuckey chassis....who knows? I would like to question Bruce on the matter.

  22. Pretty easy for Kent to make that claim now. Rod isn't around to dispute it.

Yeah, that's him. We'd see him run at Oswego and that's where this photo was taken.

  25. Gary, thanks for the run of diggers!! It was by far the greatest moment in drag racing's history!
