I am in need of some assistance. I purchased a used 1960 235 truck motor with a rebuilt head. Compression test ranged from 135 -140 between the 6 cylinders. Freeze plugs were changed and I put in new fuel pump and water pump. I started the motor and dialed in the timing. While it was running I noticed oil dripping from the front of motor. Prior to starting the motor I changed oil and put in 4 quarts of oil and I noticed that the dipstick was showing I had overfilled it. From what I can tell without removing radiator is that the oil is coming from either the timing cover or the harmonic balancer. When I get under the car the oil pan is clean and the oil is dripping from cross memeber. Any suggestions on what may be leaking? Is it possible that I overfilled it and now its coming out. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Vince
...seems 4 quarts is not enough should be 5?.....behind the lower pulley and on the timing cover where the crank sticks out ,there is a seal,...this may be the leak you found....miller
If you decide to change the crank seal be advised that there is multi step process involved. There is more to it than most other engines. The timing gear cover is removed, seal replaced, harmonic balancer installed, then tighten the timing gear cover with a new gasket. This centers the crank with the seal. Don't forget to lube the lips of the seal. Do all of this and it may still leak, nature of the beast......Al
Should hold 4 quarts unless it has an oil filter then its 5. I always put 4 1/2 on oil change because i can never get the oil filter filly drained. As above, the front seal is a leaky bugger so it the front neoprene on top of the pan. You might dry it real well and then let it run and see where it leaks.
If it's the timing cover, the bottom 2 (I think) get tightened from the inside, I recall having to pull my pan to get to them.
Yes. All the cool guys tap those holes and drill out the holes in the cover, so that in the future you can get to all of them from the outside.
You must have a road draft tube, vented rocker cover, or oil fill cap. If you stuck a fresh head on a tired 235, you probably just went from a quart every 5-600 miles to a whole lot more. Adding compression to an already worn lower end is never a good idea. They hold 5 oil, 6 with a Fram or A-C canister.
