hey need a transmission guy to give me some advice. In my 49 mercury I put a Cadillac 472 with a 400 trans in it, it stared to shoot transmission fluid out the dipstick so I pulled it and put a new vent and pump in it. I have put it back in my ride but I only have reversed gears now and all I did to the transmission was put in a new vent, new pump change oil filter and new pan gasket but now no fwd gears. Any ideas on what I may have screwed up to make the fwd gears not work. I'm no transmission guy but figured I could replace an pump and seals but now I'm regretting not taking the trans to a shop to have it done.
The two seals on the back of the pump that go into the forward clutch are messed up, most likely . Did you use teflon seals? Need to pack them in tight with trans-jel
Thanks for the information on the seals I didn't replace them so that's got to be the problem. I guess I'll pull it out again and replace the seals and go from there! Thanks for the help! Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
You had said you put a new pump in it, so I ***umed new teflon seals. You can use the metal type that interlock .Might be easier for you. You want to stand it up on a bench or crate with a hole in it, and the output shaft hanging free. Cut the heads off a couple of 5/16 bolts and use them for pump alignment . Drop the pump in nice and straight, and push it down with your hands if you can. Grease around the big pump O-ring too.. Good luck this time.
Thanks for the help I think I'll pull it out Sunday and try it again. I knew someone here on the H.A.M.B. Would have the answers so thanks again for the advice! Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I like the 472 in my mercury but I am also using a 1972 Buick skylark ch***is so it works good. I like the 472 and 500 but they are wide but have tons of torque so it moves my merc nicely. Want to upgrade to an edelbrok intake and carb which I have been told will really wake it up. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
With 375 HP and 500 ft lbs of torque, does it need to wake up? I have one in my 49 Buick and just love it. I'll let mine sleep.
