Great progress! Any idea how much the Hightower transmission costs?

The last I heard a southeast Gasser member can buy one for $3750.00. As Hightower is one of the series sponsors and gives a discount.

Been busy at it. Spindles, king pins showed up so I installed them. Lucky for me they were a returned item and someone had honed and fitted the bushings. Also got the old front body mounts cut off and welded in the new front perches for the roll cage. knocked the hot rivets out of the rest of the crossmember and removed it. Engine is setting within a few inches of final placement now.

Looks like you better change that shift knob.....you don't want to be behind the 8 ball all the time.

I used those same headers on my 53 Chevy Wagon drag car. Got them un-coated hoping for the best.
Had to cut the collectors off and go to 3 inch. Then, I had to cut and extend every one on the driver's side to clear the factory steering box. I see they will work for you thanks to relocating everything else !
Nice work !! Keep it up.

Yeah more like change the whole transmission. Don't think that saginaw is going to like high rpm launches too much. Haha

That Saginaw will work for mock up only. It will break when you hammer it. go with the good stuff to start with and you will be money ahead. Broke in the wallet ,but not on the track.

Slow progress lately, just working on the roll cage.[IMG][IMG][IMG]

Ordered rotors and bearing for the front so I can get some wheels back on it for now. Ordered my low back seats. And I got a 12 point conversion for the 10 point cage. I am in search of a another engine now. When someone walks into your shop willing to pay $700 for a rebuildable 327 you don't refuse. Possibly going to find a BB now.

A big inch small block will put less weight on the nose. You already have headers for the small block.
I thought about going with a .030 over 429 after I get all the bugs out with my 306.
If you are going to run with the Southeast Gassers, remember weight per cubic inch.
Check and see how often a big block wins at their races.

I agree on the big cubic small block, the BB idea isn't set in stone.

Super deal on the rims. My progress has stopped until I deliver this shorty wagon next week.
With the car count that they have and the amount of cars being built I look for another class being added. Maybe between A and C/Gas.
That could be why they never had a B/Gas. So they had the option later.

Thanks! Yeah I was getting curious about what was going on with your build. Yeah they just might have to add a B class. Lots of cars being built.

Nice work. I have a question. Are you going to take advantage of the engine setback? I noticed your support bar in the main hoop. Will put your seat in stock location and your distributor will be right at your foot line or close to your knees. Guess I'm a little conservative or just don't want the chance of exploding metallic stuff that close even with a scatter shield. you could curve the bar and allow more room to set the seat a little further back. Just a thought. Keep up the good work and approach !

Yes I am going to setback the engine as far as I can possibly go/ allowed. That's why I haven't committed to tack welding the support cross bar in the main hoop. In case I do end up needing to set my seats back further. I will have a new support cross bar bent in a "C" shape to get the clearance I need. Can't really make that call, until I get a Engine/tranny mounted. And get the seats mocked up. Thanks man

Makes no sense to set 550 lbs back and not move your own body weight back to totally take advantage of the set back rule. It will also make your foot box larger.
Which is a real problem with my car. I have already moved my front down tube out 2 inches to give me more foot room . Now trying to get room for 3 pedals and a tranny tunnel. Probably going to use a hydraulic throw out bearing because the fork will be in the way of my feet. I am back as far as I can go. Right at the rear frame kick up.
Good deal on the slicks. I need a deal on some 28 x 9 's . I may take advantage of the 9 inch radial slick rule.

Just to echo whats been said earlier, and I'm not racing yet - still building, but over 70% of my build budget will be for driveline components. I'll cheap out on paint and interior if it allows a bulletproof drivetrain to fit the budget. Also, planning ahead and buying used as you come across deals will help alot.

Watching this thread now too (along with all the the other southeast gasser builds)!
