    Hi Everyone!

Found the forum and hope it will be a good resource for me as I'm new to cl***ics and new to a 53 Customline 239 Flathead. Just picked her up today and everything is running great. My understanding is that opinions are split in regards to running a 8volt in the 6volt system. The guy I bought the car from said I should have no issue and that it should charge off the current generator. Is there any agreement on this or will there always be two camps?

    Thanks in advance!

    Matt

Welcome to the group. My '53 had an 8v battery when I bought it. I'm pretty sure a 6v generator will not keep an 8v battery charged, but it will die trying. I tried adjusting the regulator 7 ways from Sunday with no joy. Finally gave up and converted to 12v negative ground and never looked back.

Thanks Dobie! I think I might do the upgrade next year and until that time keep a car booster in the trunk for when I get into trouble. I might try to find a 6volt battery and give that a try too.

6v works perfectly good. Seems that incorrectly sized battery cables are the biggest culprit. 2/0 cables and good, clean connections(and quality cable connectors) are a must.

Thanks everyone. Picked up a 6 volt battery today and it everything started up nicely. A bit slower than the 8 volt but I at least I'll have the confidence my system will charge itself and will be a bit more comfortable going on longer trips.

I have used this company because they are close to me. http://www.oldcarcentre.com/ Not knowing what part of Canada you are from limits my response. I have had good luck with the usual places like Dennis Carpenter and Bob Drake. Our dollar ****s but I guess that is the price you pay.

Thanks for the advice. Just switched her over from 1 gauge to 0 gauge and starts like a dream. I'm going to stick with keeping things original with the 6 volt.
