I am getting close to welding a new steel bracket to my cast steel F100 steering box. I know I have read some posts in the past regarding this process and went through the HAMB search engine and came up zero. I have been told to heat up the steering box to very warm but not red and use 312 SS tig rod to weld it with. Anyone have experience using this method and rod?
if no one else comments get in touch with member nealinca. hes done dozens of these and makes a top notch product. pretty sure he tigs his so should have some good recommendations.
I plan to tig mine with 3/32 80s B2, it has a high chromium content. A pre-warm will work fine to help eliminate cracks in the weld.
I recently replaced the axle tubes in a Dan 60 rear end and used Crown Alloys 625-10 (3/32 dia) Read about it here:http://www.crownalloys.com/TechSheet/NICKEL_ROYAL_625-10_&_30_WITH_New_Warning_(White)_PWP.pdf The high nickel content is the trick and the welds look great with no undercut on the cast part and a nice fillet to the steel.
