Broke down and bought a lower windshield frame from Speedway. Naturally, it didn't come close to fitting so I modified the heck outta it. I like the idea of exposed gl*** across the top but California law dictates windshield wipers and rear view mirrors. Question 1: Ideas on mounting wipers and mirror? Pics would be great! Question 2: Not really enough room to mount stanchion rubber between the posts and frame but there's still a gap. Ideas on keeping that little bit of wind out? Question 3: Keeping the wind outta my face. Right now the top of the windshield is level with the top of my head. All you roadster drivers, can I chop it another 2" or will the wind just blast my face? Does the wind tend to plane up as it hits the gl***, or not?
Ca law only requires wipers on cars that came with them. T wipers were aftermarket accessories. They didn't come with mirrors either, but on todays roads, mirrors are a good idea. If the frame fit right, there would be room at the mounting stud for a horse shoe spacer which would allow for the stanchion rubber. The frame is too wide. I wouldn't loose sleep over it. Keeping the little wind that comes in there out won't make any difference in a roadster, unless you run wind wings. And yes, chopping it another 2" won't put the wind in your face. My A windshield is chopped 2 1/2 inches, and it makes no difference when I run with the top off.
Many down here get away with chopped frames and no wipers as they are treated as wind deflectors, not full height windshields. If you then add a roof you need a wiper. Does the CA law allow wind deflectors? Would a small rear vision mirror on each side be sufficient in lieu of a centrally mounted mirror? If a push comes to a shove a screw down MG [open car] style mirror on dash rail might suffice?
If I remember correctly the rule around here - and I think it was British in origin - was, wipers are required if you can't open or flip down the windscreen, or can't look over the top of it while driving.
if it were mine , Yep ....chop the hell outta those posts , wear goggles , an clamp on mirror an clamp on wipers cheers Steve in Oz
If your head is even with the top of the windshield, your sitting too high and need to get a lower seat bottom some how, if not you will become a member of the flying hat club. I was a member!
What does it matter what the law is in South Africa or Australia? The guy lives in California. He doesn't need to worry about wipers, but an inside, and driver's side mirror is safer than no mirrors, and may keep the cops off his ***.
I mounted the top bar style wiper through my bottom frame tube and let both blade and handle lay done on the Cowel. No issues with it. That was back 30+ years ago. The Wizzard
Thanks for all the responses! My car will be ***led under SPCNS so I do need wipers and rearview mirror. Doing a little research I found that Lang's Old Car Parts sell as manual wiper ***embly that attaches to a clamp that clamps to the windshield. Simple and effective. Speedway sell a rearview that glues to the windshield. Problem solved! Now I'm just leary about chopping the windshield another couple of inches. It would look good but I'm sure I'd have a lot of wind in the face. Prove me wrong, please!
Drive it as is for a while. Then put a 3" thick book under yer **** and go for a drive. Should tell ya all ya need to know. If ya need more research try a 2" thick book repeat the drive. That's kind of a measure twice and cut once kind of research. The Wizzard
Why about one of these type of brackets, found on most peep mirrors. It could be mounted straight to the gl*** then Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
vonschmidt; I do believe that those screws will shatter the gl***, at a min cause runs. I doesn't take much pressure, esp concentrated in a small area to destroy the surface tension on gl***. evintho; T-bucket guys have been using a clamp-on electrical 1 or 2 speed wiper ***mbly for a long time. Plugs into a cigarette lighter recepticle, iifc. Much as I hate to suggest it, look in Speedways' catalog for it. & then I'd look almost anywhere else to buy - except Hoffman Group. FWIW. Marcus...
I had a 14" , windshield on a T Bucket and I could almost look over the top of the windshield. Never had a ball cap fly off and wind in my face was a none issue. But if you're 7' tall and wearing a Sombrero, yea, wind would be an issue.
Ron Francis Wiring has windshield wiper mounts for rectangular, round and flat gl*** applications. They are removable and can be used to satisfy the DMV. I use one on my Deuce roadster for NSRA Safety 23 and remove it.
