I loved SS/DI. Wasn't it a sister publication to Drag Racing USA. SS/DI lived for a while after D.R. USA died then it sold to the penthouse people. I miss Woody Hatten (RIP) and his articles. It was a great door slammer magazine.
I wonder if a separate thread if SS&D 'Best of' HAMB criteria cars would do? A salute to a once highly respected EAST COAST magazine.
The first few years of SS&DI were the best ... in my opinion once they started doing road tests of new musclecars the magazine started going down hill... anyway ...I'm looking for the feature on the Thumper '61 409 of Gene Carter ... at least memory tells me there was a feature on the car in one of the early issues! Jim Davis opened an ad agency with representation on the west coast and in Detroit. After the agency closed, he did marketing stuff for the Spar brothers at B&M.
I remember the day I got the latest issue of SS&DI out of the mailbox. While walking back to the house, I was thumbing through it and there on page 20 was a picture of my willys! When I got in the house I said to my wife "Hey look here, there's a picture of my willys in super stock magazine". She took a look at it and said "So... It's not in color". We got divorced a few years later.

Just recently (July 16, 2017) i purchased a bunch of mint SS&DI from 1967 to 1972. I made the bone head move of selling all my SS&DI magazines back in the 1990's. I will not be making that silly move again. I am keeping these and treasuring them. As a kid i use to love this magazine as well as Hot Rod magazine. I remember my very first issue of SS&DI having a 66 or 67 Ford Fairlane station wagon drag car on the cover, i was in grade 6 at the time and around 1969. Does anyone have a picture of that very cover. That is one issue i do not have. I am 58 years old and i gave up on car magazines many years ago. Today's car magazines do not have the charm of of the 50's 60's 70's car magazines. I have a complete Hot Rod and Motor Trend magazine collection from 1949 to 1974. I wish i had a complete collection of SS&DI of the glory years anyway 60's and 70's. Cheers. George
I don't remember the details of how/why Lopez Publications folded. His last magazine publishing effort was a short-lived collaboration with Terry Cook (ex-editor of Hot Rod/Car Craft)
In the late 60's when I was young & stupid I had a US drag racing magazine that had a feature on a Ford Bronco, the feature had a double exposed pic showing the chassis etc, I think it was a funny car & maybe a gold/brown colour .......I have always remembered this article and wonder if anyone else does......was it in SS & DI?.......oh and has Elapsed Times mag ceased publication?........got the Winter 2016 issue with the Champion Speed Shop FED on the cover & it has "Collectors Last Issue" but was wondering.....lol....thanks, Andy Douglas
Andy, the car (truck?) that you are remembering was Doug Nash's Bronco Buster. It had an aluminum frame and small block Ford power and weighed in at right around 1600 lbs. It was featured in several magazines at the time as it was unique. Roo

I know I am very late at the game here but yes that is the cover of the magazine. Just a very young punk kid and that was my first issue of the magazine. With the 66-67 Fairlane wagon drag car. Cheers.
Paper can't keep up with technology, it's sad we have got this way, I see a couple of the last survivor magazine have disappeared from the selves, soon they will all be gone, yes it really s$$is, I miss all of the old ones I grew up reading.
