Technical GM Transmission Advice

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by spillaneswillys, Jul 19, 2017.

  1. My 34 Dodge is giving up it's transmission. It is a 700R overdrive and I am thinking of going to a 350. Any good better or best places to buy one?
    Thanks,
    Joe

    Talk to local transmission shops.

If you get a long tail shaft version (from an early 70s car/truck), it will almost bolt in, but you'll need to move the crossmember a couple inches forward, I think.

Go to TCI or similar and thru Summit, Jegs, etc. Search on internet. The two are very different in mounting....several inches.

  4. Pick up a core trans , a book , and build it yourself. One of the easiest transmissions out there.
You could pay a local trans or engine shop to put the case in the Jacuzi cabinet. Clean the rest with mineral spirits.
You can buy a full kit through Summit or maybe a Transtar in your area.
    You're a hot rodder, right?

I'm lucky, when I was 15 I did my first automatic, I didn't know they were magic. Been doing them ever since.

Any tranny shop worth hanging a sign out front can do a 350 turbo. Get a book and do it yourself. One of the easiest automatics to build. Why do you want to give up the overdrive?

Yeah, you will miss the 700R4. Remember when gas went to $4.00 a gallon ? If you do ANY real road traveling, you will wish your mill was turning 2100 rpms instead of 2900. Something else to remember, and that is your ride will be a streetrod with either auto trans installed, not a hotrod, so at least go for some decent mileage.

You need a 350 with a 9 inch tail shaft housing, the trans mount will be forward 3/4 of an inch.

Go to the junkyard, Pull dipsticks out of them, get one that has clean fluid in it, Buy a Trans-go Shift kit for it and forgetaboutit. It'll last forever.
