Your primer will go over bare metal and will adhere just fine. Polyester primer is basically the same product as plastic filler, just thinned down enough to go thru a gun. Would probably be fine as long as it didn't ever get wet and it , got top coated asap. Looks like you live in a high humidity area, that alone will start metal rusting thru polyester. The longer it sits exposed the worst it will get. Prior to the epoxies coming out surface rust forming under unprotected filler and primers was always an issue and the cause of most paint failures. DP or some comparable epoxy is cheap enough it would be good insurance to put a coat down before you use the poly. Think of the epoxy as a sealer (not good for sanding/ blocking) and the poly over it for a good blocking surface.
Called and talk to the field rep. He said wit it being a direct to metal application it does seal the metal like epoxy and passes the 500 hour salt water spray. Difference in the two is epoxy is 2-3 mil spray and theirs is a 6-8 mils. If I was to leave it after spraying it not to sand it until I'm ready to spray the top coat.
That's interesting. Goes against what I've always heard but maybe they've improved it since I first started using the product. Come to think of it I was surprised to see it was direct to metal, I don't believe it use to be. Wow, do you suppose someone actually improves a product these days without a significant price increase ? Usually it's the other way around, pay more for a cheaper product.
Friend of mine that paints for a living turned me to this. I called Evercoat and went though the tech line. She couldn't really answer my questions for sure 1) does it seal the metal 2) how durbale is it to epoxy She gave me the rep, Wades, number and we talked for 10-15 minutes. I actually called him back after you posted about going straight to top coat when I was done. If I could leave the cab in the shop coated for a few months (have to get the rest of the car built). He said I could leave it as long as it was in the building and not to sand it until I'm ready for top coat. Now I know it's against the religion on the forums and I shouldn't mention it but....I liked the pinta, smooth rust look of weather cars. That's my plan for this.
