I have just aquired a Mallory 275E YC distributor for my 51 8BA flathead I will run in my 33 Truck. The engine has twin 94's hence the mechanical advance dizzy. I intend to run a 12v generator, negative ground, mostly for looks and the truck won't have any big current draws. While researching this distributor I have read a couple stories about using a filter if I run a generator. True? If so, any one have a part number? I have a 4004 cap on this and will also want the correct wires. Anyone point me to a source? Wiring diagram? Rotor #? I found and bought some new points already. Thanks, Gordo

You don't need a any kind of filter for the setup you're describing; that's only if you're running some other modern stuff that can be damaged by the voltage spikes. I have a Mallory dual point on the Merc engine in my '51 Ford with a 6 volt generator. I am running a tach driver that allows me to run a regular 12 volt negative ground tach on 6 volt positive ground. It has modern electronics, so it has an input filter and an output filter, plus it is internally fused. I am also running good ole' Packard 440 plug wires. I don't have a radio. I think the "E" in the distributor number means it has an extended shaft (that protrudes about 3/4" past the drive gear; I know my YC275E does). If this is the case you will need a timing cover with a provision for it. If you could, can you get back to me about whether your distributor has the extended shaft? I'm trying to get a handle on all these numbers and codes.
I don't have the distributor in hand, it is on it's way. Should have it this week. I will have to compare shaft lengths and see what I need to do.
I'll just mention a strange thing that happened to me. When I tried to install the bolt on the clamp that goes over the flange on the distributor to hold it onto the head, it didn't fit. I have a set of Edmunds 8BA heads on the engine that I think are the problem. I had to grind a slight amount off of the distributor mounting flange to make the bolt go in. A stock distributor fit fine with the Edmunds heads, and the Mallory worked fine with stock heads. Varying tolerances, I guess.
Have the dizzy in hand, looks good. Measurement from mounting plate to bottom of drive gear is the same as stock. Shaft projects about a quarter in shorter than stock but still an inch in the bearing. Unit looks good, brown cap and rotor. will take some pics tomorrow!
See below, but the new dizzy does have a shaft extension below the drive gear but so does the stock one!
Some stock ones do, some don't. Since your stock distributor has the extension, you probably have the right front cover.
