Was at a local college the other day. They have what is called a fab lab.It had 3d printers, laser scanners and other ***orted equipment to help manufacture prototype parts. Its free to the public just need to donate to pay for materials. In order to be called a fab lab it needs to be open to the public. If you google fab labs there all over the place.Thought it was pretty cool that there out there for the public use.

At the moment, nobody makes it.

That was a PAW product, and PAW is no more.

They aren't unobtanium in price. They simply don't exist to buy, at any price.

If you make a new pattern or buck to sand cast from, it will need to be 1-2% larger to allow for shrinkage. If you use the existing alum part for a master, your new part would be smaller.

  16. So Tuesday is the late night.
    Finished repairing the files.
Set it up in an STL file.
The printer software said this 45* arrangement was optimal. It needs support Material on the way up. That support material gets dissolved when it's finished .

Here's the printer getting started doing its thing

  17. I got this about 1 HR ago.
Painfully slow process. The software estimated 28 hrs to print

I work ICT and even the primary schools have 3D printing these days so 5yr olds to 12yr olds do 3d modeling scanning and printing.
Admittedly many have cheap printers as time/quan***y is a thing when you have a cl*** of kids wanting spaceships, dice or prints of there faces etc.
If you are scanning you need a decent one really. Although some phone apps will work taking a gizzilon photos of a static object on a turntable to make the object file but then you often need go fix the mesh as things like reflectivity can screw things up with these.

A mate had his 10 year old make him up an intake that he took down to the foundry and had made up.
I have plans to use 3D printing alot in my current build a bit further down the track.

Found this company here in Canada. Not sure if the plates are big enough and if they would do a quotation based on your file:

3D Systems, Stratasys and Proto Labs are all larger companies that will print in DMLS from aluminum powdered metal. Your 15" dimension may be problematic; many DMLS machines are limited to 12" or so.

Now that you have an STL file, you can have a Quickcast pattern printed for investment casting. I did this for a custom rifle receiver once. I paid $900 for a part cast in 17-4 PH stainless. It ain't cheap but when ya gotta have it, you gotta have it. Still, it would be worth checking out.
