Who says muscle cars aren't cool? I got to spend a few hours today with a dude who cut his teeth on a Frontanec (sp?) powered Model T with "a cut-down body." He's 84. We were talking at the house of a guy who just bought a '70 LS6 Chevelle. He was reuniting the old dude with it: The oldster ordered it brand new in '70...when he was 50 years old. He ordered it with bucket seats and no console ("because it took up too much space...I wanted to be able to set the newspaper there or something") and the automatic shifter on the column ("I didn't like the floor shifter--it was flimsy"). It was red with a red interior, base-model gauges with idiot lights and no tach (so all you guys that think a 6,500 rpm tach is a sure wayt to I.D. an LS6 just got schooled), plain hood (no cowl induction), no SS stripes and a vinyl roof. "I wanted it plain. I wasn't out looking for trouble or tearing up the concrete" he said, "but if you wanted to try me, why, I'd be happy to blow your doors off." He traded in a '69 SS 396 Chevelle for the car. A**** others he's owned were a handful of high horsepower Corvettes (including several big block cars in the '70s--well into his 50s!), and his last fast car was an Buick Grand National. He also had a '62 Chevy pick-up that he bought in '63 or so...and immediately pulled the engine and granny 4-spd, replacing them with a 327 Corvette engine straight from GM, and an over-the-counter Muncie 4spd. 84 years old, and he stopped by to look at his old car while driving between Orlando and New York, with his equally ancient--and supportive--wife. Yup, sometimes being surrounded by muscle cars all day long is a blast. -Brad
Cool story. I always like it when you get some history like that from a previous owner. Back in 89 or 90 I bought a 70 Roadrunner from a used car lot. Took it home and tore it apart looking for any problem areas and found the build sheet and protecto plate with the first owners name on it, so I called info and they still lived in the same town. Spent a good 20 minutes on the phone with her talking about the car and listening to her complain that her new husband in 73 made her sell it. LOL Nik
i love muscle cars. i always wanted to get a 66' malibu, but i ended up getting my plymouth. me personally i just like cars, it doesnt matter what kind, model, domestic, or import, if its sick then its sick . i hate it when people look down on other cars just cause their so narrow minded.
thats a great story. mmmmmmmmm LS-6 i bought mine in 1980 a 10 year old 70 chevelle SS454 RPO LS-6 (CRR 450 horse automatic) every number matches, never was a bolt removed from the car (all original yet) still got her too & it still fries the back tires right through high gear & then some! i love to go down the exit ramps onto the highway & lay 20 feet of rubber hitting high gear GOING DOWN THE RAMP! the original owner stops by when hes in town & i stop by & visit the second owner once in awhile. ----- its been seen quite often at a parking meter at the court house real early in the morning while i was up in front of the judge gettin a nice fine laid on me for driving violations (S-plural) seeevvvvveral unnecessary display of speed or speeding tickets. at stop lights the "JAP ****" drivers want to just crawl under their seats & hide & wonder why they got out of bed that day. its my favorite car! i scrimped & saved & begged & borrowed to get that baby & she cost me $2,400.00 at the time.
i sat & talked to a guy at a car show who just paid mucho denaro for an LS-6 & i told him i also had one since i was 18. i told him how id been in some cRaZy***ed police chases, had *** in it, turned around in a field drive once when we were up street dragging & my LS-6 sank out of sight in the mud & it chewed & clawed & rooster tailed its way back onto hot asphalt, how i got mad at my girl friend once & put her rear G/78/14 bias tires on my car & melted them off one night for her, etc... etc... ----- he said he paid BIG for his car but he didnt get to buy any memories like those!
muscle cars are cool. I realy hope when i get older i never loose the need for old cars and a little old school horse power...
Anybody know a good muscle car board? Sometimes I want to talk "late models" but I know the HAMB isn't the place to do it. I just haven't found the right board yet.
