All I have ever seen them as were deluxes but since they are really a truck I would have thought they would have came as standards which the 1/2 ton pickups resembled,my next 40 Ford model project is going to be a standard sedan delivery and was curious if one was ever made.
I think the reason was related to the poor sales of the '38 and '39's. Around 9800 '34's were sold, '35, '36, and '37 all averaged 8000+ and then '38 dropped to 2700 and '39 it was around 3500. Clearly it was the Standard styling that hurt sales, but the Deluxe 1940's recovered to 4800 sold.
All 1938 model sales suffered a lot compared to 1937 model sales.. I'm not sure the standard styling is what hurt sales of deliveries....
The '41 sedan delivery used the '40 std front sheet metal and the same body as the '40 SD. Different trim on the hood. I like them better than the '40.
There were 740 standard sedan deliveries made in 1940 according to the Ford archives and here is one that we authenticated...
I have a 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery - late year model - It has a standard grill and 1941 stainless - yes I know some will claim it is a 1941 - I have the correct 1940 title NC title. This car has always been in NC . At the 50th 1940 Ford Early V-8 club meet at the Charlotte Motor Speedway (over 25 years ago) I saw and talked to a owner of this same configuration and he researched the stainless , ect. When I went to pick up this delivery - I thought I was buying a 1941. When he got the title - and it was a 1940 - I knew this was like the orginal restored 1940 at CMS I saw in 1990. My sedan delivery is a building resting quietly for the past 25 years - It has no motor or trans - I have been collecting some really nice sheet metal for it - 2 pairs on NOS rear fenders with parts tags still on them - a pair of nice doors, ect. A future project - my plan is mild street rod - but if a nice original drive train is located - perhaps resore. It was next in line before I bought the 1939 Ford Convertible - that is still unfinished. Too much family and work and horses and not enough hot rod building. Attached is my Dad's 1939 Sedan Delivey - my brother now owns - I put 351-C CJ - 4 speed top loader and mustang 2 IFS. do have have a digital pic of the 1940 Sedan Delivery.
Yes Ford did change to the new 42-48 sedan delivery body and the back window is curved from the factory...No Mercury sedan deliverys ..
I have never seen any Ford sedan deliveries from 1939 that have factory front sheet metal matching the 1939 Deluxe other than several customs that were built for expensive customers....
