I'm trying to get everything I need to convert this 54 Chevy 210 from 6v to 12v. I've already gathered all the bulbs needed including headlights and a alternator bracket pictured below. Here is the car I'm working on. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
it can't hurt. you can still use a 6 V starter . only possible problems might be the fuel gauge and maybe fuel gauge. and lights. if it still starts and runs fine on the six volts... and don't need a new battery... you should just stick with the six volts.
Nice car there. You'll be glad you made the change to 12 volt. We've made the conversion numerous times. Last two projects we bought the Powergen - an alternator but looks like a generator. Works great with our flathead Fords. Pricey but it a real problem solver. So what's the full story with the car? How log you have it?
I plan on upgrading the stereo system and doing air ride suspension which requires a 12v. I just recently purchased it, apparently all the pinstriping and lettering was done in the late 60's by a local legend Bob Taylor of Taylor's House of Color. The car must have sat in a garage since 1970 as it still had a plate from that year on it. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I'm not typically into much pin striping, but I kinda like it. You didn't really ask a question. Are you asking what else you need for the conversion besides what you have already? If you're doing a stereo and bags, I would rewire the car. I would recommend a centech wiring kit. We use them on everything. If you don't want or need to rebuild gauges, then you'll need voltage reducers for them.
Yes, I'm sorry. I was asking what else will I need to do the conversion other than what I have. Sorry about that. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
No worries. Here is the fuse panel I'd recommend for the rewire, but call centech, and tell them your car and plan, and they will set you up with exactly what you need. http://www.centechwire.com/PDP-1B-High-Tech-Fuse-Panel-PDP-1B.htm One of the reasons I like this panel more then the others, is that the wires aren't already connected to the fuse panel. Makes for a MUCH easier and cleaner install.
I found this article very helpful. https://www.fillingstation.com/articles/6volt.htm Sent from my Pixel using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
You need to step the voltage down to the gauges and the light in the gauges(or replace those bulbs), hit the wrecking yard and pull the reducer out of a mid 70's Ford or Dodge...cheap...or buy the Runtz things, but I think they are about 25 a pop...and you need one for each gauge. Should help ya a bit
